Pretty much. CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards are an insane way to promote fuel economy.

Imagine if we wanted to promote fitness with a "CAWS" (Corporate Average Waist Size). Levi's mens jeans must have an average waist size of 32" each year. You'd wonder why size 28 jeans were inexpensive with few features, and why size 40 jeans were bedazzled with features and very expensive. Levi's would be trying to discourage large sizes and encourage small sizes (I'm a 34 these days, trying to get back to 32).

Let's assume (and it is a leap) that fuel economy is a social good. A European style fuel tax would accomplish the goal without the market distortions of CAFE.

And it killed our station wagons!!!

I don’t own a wagon, but I do find them appealing. The Audi AllRoad, MB E63 and Volvo V90 all come to mind. There’s something especially bad ass about the Volvo’s long, low-slung stance.

I like some station wagons, too.

I have to settle for a sedan with fold down seats, though.

Down-Under there was a FWD craze before the SUV craze.
Before that, folks just bought Station Wagons. Major manufacturers all had a model.
They were very compact compared to the US variety but they were roomy and perfect for moving a family of five on holidays and household furniture when necessary.
At some point buyers decided that SUV's did it all better and the Station Wagon dropped off the model listing.
Personally I prefer the StationWagon as they drive and look better. Here is the last GMH Station Wagon sold in Australia.

I am debating between this car and an RSQ8 right now. Did you go with the carbon ceramics? I know the wagon will be a better driving vehicle but for some reason I have an unfounded bias against wagons.

Both terrific. RSQ8 looks like an ordinary Q8, not bad, just not mean. My wife has a Q8. RS6 not only drives better but has looks to match it’s personality. Much wider flared out fenders, huge air inlets etc.
Did not get the ceramics (didn’t want occasional squeaks) and the steels work very well. Ceramic option increases the speed limiter from 174mph to 190mph. Mine will never see those speeds so skipped the $10k option. I highly recommend the upgraded 1820watt B&O 19 speaker stereo. It’s amazing. Good luck.

As I mentioned earlier I think the SUV replaced the station wagon due to manufacturers bypassing MPG restrictions per fleet. It wasn't that people didn't want station wagons is was because the BIG 3 basically discontinued them.

And a someone who grew up with family wagons and was not all that impressed with them. They usually rattled and were not all that classy or luxurious I was happy to see the Ford Explorer and then Crossovers show up. Nicer ride. In theory, they were safer due it sitting higher, easier to see in front of you in traffic etc etc.

I guess what's old is new again is the name of the game here, and people/kids who never suffered through sitting facing out the back window of a station wagon on family trips for hours on end until you puked and got to sit up front, think the "new" wagons are pretty cool, is the novelty of it.

I get that some of the new ones shown here are pretty cool, personally I'd take an SUV or Crossover any day.

There's a lot more wagons than SUV's here in my neck of the woods, pretty much that way in all of NW Europe.

^^^^ Nice!

I’m getting some crazy markup figures from a couple dealers. Not 100% committed yet but putting out feelers. They are treating the RS6 like a grey Daytona.

That must be quite fast too as it's RS6.

How does it compare to M5 and AMG 63 wagons?

When I was a kid, my bestfriends mom had a 1968 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser... The cars name was Edna. ( like the one below, same color and everything )

She wasn't pretty, but had loads of room.

I was getting the same thing, but found one who did not markup for existing owners and that was that. But yeah, some dealers are still acting really shady about these and the RSQ8s.

Believe the Merc is slightly faster, but rougher for day to day. Audi is more of an everyday car (to the extent you can say that about a wagon with almost 600hp and lb/ft. Given I live in Manhattan I probably won’t have many opportunities to open it up day to day.

Believe M5 is probably slightly faster with comp package (close enough to be a push I suspect) but not a wagon (at least in the US) and pretty rough day to day. Ymmv as always with these things.

I have an aging Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDi Quattro DSG.

It does everything I ask of it, 0-60 under 6 seconds, 50 mpg on a long run and excellent grip. I am somewhat loathed to change it

Thanks for the feedback. I do have an S4 so perhaps that’ll be useful. My local dealer has two but not in my desired color combos.

Congratulations- I think you made the right call.

Nice wagons!

I love longroofs, and I’m constantly tempted by the AMG and Avant wagon beasts, and even by the FF, but on the laser-straight, mirror-flat, massively overcrowded roads of urban Miami, I can’t convince myself they make sense. At best, I could enjoy an occasional freeway on-ramp - ? CAFE aside, I’ve never understood the triumph of SUVs (with their higher centers of gravity, and thus inescapably worse handling) over wagons.

Besides, even this E91 wagon’s capability exceeds my talent - I can already scare myself plenty! After literally decades of honing them to Swiss-watch level, the E9Xes carried the last of BMW’s silky-smooth inline 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engines, at least for the USA. (I hunted down a nice pre-2012 model, for exactly this reason.)

That model did and they were a lovely bit of kit.
A bloke who lived nearby had one and I used to wave to him because I liked the car. One day he stopped to chat and we ended up going for a drive when he wound it out to show me what it could do. Very impressive.
No more Holdens/Commodores/GM vehicles made here of course.
