Official TRF Film Festival Thread
Share what you’re watching, looking forward to seeing, or which movie you saw and would recommend, or not:
I’m watching 1917 and it’s a fine film. Solid directing and ensemble cast. I like these types of historical films when they’re well written and have great detail. Highly recommended. |

Oh I am going to be all over this thread... I am not currently watching anything tonight though I did watch the newly released version of Dr Strangelove last night.
the 4k resolution and higher frame rate was only really evident in a couple of handful of scenes when compared to the last version of the film due to the nature of the way the movie was made on lower quality film stock, but it is still a worthy addition to the movie collection. There was a much higher dynamic range in the image though. |

Interested to hear what people thought of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
I thought it was overhyped and below average. Yet many people I know loved it. I typically like Tarantino films as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Dont get me wrong, much of it was outstanding and great, but I think Quentin not only got a few things wrong... aka, the Bruce Lee Scene... (even though B.L. was around in that time, and was somewhat indirectly involved with the sharon tate murders, by knowing Jay Sebring and he was interviewed by the FBI at the time), that characterization of him goes against every ounce of his being. Lastly, and most importantly, the ending was putrid and hugely disappointing. while I really didn't relish the idea of seeing everyone in the tate residence being butchered to death... it is what happened, and I was prepared for the worst. the fact that the deaths were mutated into a revenge scene was just not quite right in my mind. it's not the same as inglorious Basterds ending where history was changed... the entire reason for this film was whipped out by leaving Sharon Tate alive at the end. in this movie... Sharon Tate was little more than Cinematic Click Bait. in the hierarchy of QT films, this one fits in at last place. |

Top 5 for him. Found out later it was also a QT version of a Burt Reynolds biopic, who the Pitt character was based on and Bruce Dern played an older Burt Reynolds, who would have got the role had he not died before filming. The DiCaprio character wasn’t actually the films main character and the Tate, Bruce Lee and Manson Family thing was just sub-plots where QT could go gonzo. He’s used the formula perfectly for years. |

Tarantino's thinking too much with his ego and about his legacy. I'll try to watch it again sometime because I only made it half way through the first time, and it's extremely rare that I bail on a movie.

I actually couldn’t finish it either. This movie, and Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems, are two of the only movies I can say that for. I can typically sit through anything. |

Uncut Gems?
I liked it. ------------------------------- Watched newly released 4k version of Snatch... it looks fantastic and the film is as great as ever. I used to hate Guy Ritchie, but I have come to like quite a few of his films. |

Same. I thought it was awesome in every way. Particularly liked the score by Daniel Lopatin/Oneohtrix Point Never, which reminded me of Tangerine Dream’s score for that early Michael Mann film ‘Thief’. Which is not to say Dubshack was wrong about it, each to their own, but it was definitely to my taste.

Personally, though, it was too much of a tension convention for my taste. Everything about the film was uncomfortable to watch. Some people love that kind of movie, some don't. Still, I can admire, even marvel at the craftsmanship involved.

Tonight it was Raiders of the Lost Ark for maybe the 30th time.
Can’t get sick of this film. No slow parts at all and the sound track is so right. |

I watched that again recently too. So good. Spielberg was just incredible back then. We rewatched ET the other night and were struck by how tight and perfectly paced it is. Might rewatch Close Encounters soon.

if you hate the overtly slow corny dialog routine, you're gonna love the double feature I watched today...
First was Steve Buscemi acted/directed Trees Lounge (1996)... A great ACTION PACKED no holes bared STAR PACKED thriller about a guy that always gets the girl and the destruction that he leaves in his wake as he sidles his way thru life. After that I watched a fantastic action drama called Bagdad Cafe (1987) where the badass 'Artist' Jack Palance falls in love, steals another mans wife and runs roughshod over a small collection of eclectic individuals all trapped in a foreboding run down Diner... check out those two WONDERFUL films if you want some modern action choreography and action storytelling, they are great. |

Denis Villeneuve did an outstanding job with Sicario... it's a great film. Sicario 2 is a different director and storyline, albeit with the same characters. it's watchable and definitely enjoyable, but ultimately lacks the originals spark. I didnt even know they made a #3...
I am just waiting another couple of months (oct) until Denis Villeneuve's DUNE comes out! |

I really liked Uncut Gems. Sandler should have been nominated for that one.
I enjoy independent films and action films. Especially when they come together. If you want something off the beaten path try the French film "Lost Bullet" on Netflix. |

I watched Layer Cake, a 2004 British crime movie w/Daniel Craig last night.
Clever movie, very good cast. By the way, I liked Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I saw it as a look at 60's Hollywood, thru the lives of 2 has-been actors, whose lives crossed with a brutal part of history without knowing it. They were fictional characters, though their life stories could have been dozens of real actors. The fantasy of the ending would have changed Hollywood lore, because the Tate murder would have never happened. Instead the ending would have been a blurb on the evening news, and Sharon Tate may have gone on to be famous for her roles. It's like Forest Gump inadvertently touching major events of history, without a clue of how important they were. I'm hot and cold with QT movies, but I found this well done. |

(I was misled, Sicaro 3 is/was "in the works"? No sign of it yet.) Would you recommend any other Villeneuve movies? You'll of course be familiar with Mann's 'Heat', have you seen Oliver Marchal's "36"? It's not generally listed as an homage to Heat...but I think it is, and it's brilliant. Auteuil and Depardieu, superb. It's subtitled but well worth a look. |
