Icon20 2017/18 Bordeaux Issues

I was doing a lot of reading on the Bordeaux wines of 2017 and there was a big spring frost that year that destroyed partially or all their crops. Then in May 2018 there was a massive hail storm that caused 17500 acres of damage, 80% of 8400 acres were massively damaged. So in May 2018, the buds were 10 days away from breaking then the hail knocked off the buds and damage the wood, enough wood damage that the sap won’t run through the plant. Which will effect 2019 as well. Oh and 2013 had a nasty frost hit too, so 4 out of the last 9 years are effected, inclusive of 2019

Smith Haut Laffitte
Graves
Plus a few more

The Congac Region in May was even worst damage in the May 2018 hail

So instead of buying wine to age I ususaly buy to drink now or in 5 or less years. At least I know what to expect, unless it’s an exception year. (NAPA) like 2012/13/14

2017/18 Bordeaux Issues

EDIT: 2017 was partially, not a total loss, Reading is fundamental




Look what I found from my first Car in my garage. Sumner County, KS plates, I have one from Nevada too 😜

Good info my friend.

I heard a little about this - but not any real details — will definitely be interesting - especially coupling that with the increase in cost of Bordeaux futures - which has skyrocketed over the last 4-6 vintages.

With lower yields no doubt Bordeaux’s from the bigger houses will either become tougher to source - or quite costly...

We’ll see...

Even better is it’s at 13% Alchol, which I enjoy more now instead of the big high 14%-15% alcohol Napa’s

Although that 2012 Cask 23 we had was crazy good. It Smoked the Hundred Acre in taste, bouquet, and bordeaux color. Lamb chops were perfect with the wines

I’ve been getting into wine recently but I’m a total novice when it comes to wine. Ive always liked wine and mainly drink Cabernet and have discovered some pretty good ones this past year. I bought a couple bottles of Silver Oak from Alexander valley in Northern California and I have them stored in a small wine fridge at 55 degrees. Then my wife and I went out to dinner with a friend and I ordered us a bottle of Duckhorn which I really liked. I might order a few bottles of that as well. When we were in Florida last weekend I took my family out to dinner and I picked up a couple bottles of Duckhorn to take to the restaurant with us which was a nice treat.

Unfortunately, my wife doesn’t care for red wine, she drinks Chardonnay, so I rarely open a bottle unless we have guests over but I do love a good cab.

We have spent some time in Paso Robles and visited a few wineries up there, Daou was my favorite. I’m not crazy about any of the local wineries here in Temecula so I mainly stick to Northern and Central California wines.

I need to learn more about this though. Maybe that’s something I can do in retirement.

It’s nice when the wife doesn’t drink Cabernet, very happy mine doesn’t. Mine’s happpy with KJ Chardonnay

You’ll find Washington State and Oregon wines are really nice and extremely fair priced. Then you can have Cabernet and Pinot Noir and compare without spending to much but getting great quality. Then once in a while try a nice Napa Cabernet and notce that there’s a lot of nice Napa Cabs priced more reasonably.

You should be able to find 2013/14/15 Napa’s still on the shelves and not overly expensive. And don’t forget to read, a lot, on the vintages and wineries in CA as some are very consistent year after year for the most part.

Just In: Literally, Capitol Grill in Fort Lauderdale just called and they have their grenerous unlimited pour going on during dinner back in action. Phenomenal deal and they usually have great wines. You really can't beat it and you can try 7 different wines all through dinner. 29.00

Until September 3rd I think she said. Might be nation wide too
