I don’t own either watch, and I like both (have always thought the AK was underrated) just find it really interesting.
I think the collecting community is very sheepish. The AK was subject to early criticism that it has not overcome, whereas these new OP had early fanfare. It’s interesting because I find the AK to be quite understated compared to some of these loud dials.
Anyways, that’s all, just some discussion based on observation. Feel free to share your theory, or disagree altogether!

OP has a coherent design. Rolex did not, for example, take the black OP and give it Stella colored hour markers or a Stella colored Rolex logo.

The air king is a great but funky watch like the Milgauss. A serious watch but with a splash of fun. The colored OP is not a serious watch, it is clearly a fashion piece and priced as such (at the AD). It's lighthearted nature is what attracts people to it, IN MY OPINION.

Not sure it's a good comparison. People like the new colors of the OP. People don't like the dial of the Air King.

The new OP’s harken back to earlier iterations (think Stella dials etc).

The new AK is more a mishmash with a lot going on

Nothing wrong with it if it floats your boat, to each their own.

+1

Not everyone has to like what I like, and I don't have to like what others like. This is the beauty of our world.

I am not a fan of AK due to its too busy a dial, but that aspect of the watch might be its main appeal to many others.

I also don't like Hamilton Khaki's for example, where they have the military hours 13...24 written inside. Just makes them too busy for my liking.

Too many 5s in the AK. Not one in the OP.
