1088 replaces 88
OP keeps turning them out.
This time, though, the 1xxx update does not mean a move to in-house. Instead, the 1088 gets: * 8 more hours of power reserve (from 42 to 50) (nice!); * 4 more jewels (from 21 to 25) (nice!); * traditional screws (or spring bars? not sure) instead of quick change buttons (boo!); * grey minute markers instead of white (a detail that helps the classic PAM 5-minute markers stand out better) (nice!); * the Asso strap instead of alligator (personal preference, but definitely a cost saving move... I prefer the gator); * tang instead of déployant (ok for Asso, but a cost move; personally prefer OEM gator with OEM deployant over OEM Asso with OEM tang). Inverted cyclops and regular lume remain (nice!). No word yet if the case is thinner or if the price changes. (Pic source.) |

Honestly, really hard to get excited about anything Panerai is doing these days.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the 88, as it was the first PAM that I saw that I REALLY liked way back in 2010. I then shifted to the 312 before going with my 164. |

Bring back/update the 89 (Titanium w/anthracite dial version of the 88) and I'd be interested. Otherwise, it's not enough of an improvement to get too excited about.

Yeah I was surprised with the change of model number they didn’t go in house because they have updated almost all their old line with new in house movements to replace the ETA ones. This one is strange to me.

I think the “WIS” thing just refers to a love of watches. As for “in-house”, it isn’t “better” in terms of performance and is worse in terms of cost of service and service time. And historically, Panerai has always used third party movements, so ETA is more authentic. It’s just that Swatch decided to stop selling their movements, so Richemont had to develop a range of movements. |

I see no point in paying Ferrari price for a Chevy V8.
Either you have bragging rights or you don't and paying serious cash for a movement that you can get in an Oris or Ball or whatever--just doesn't appear to me personally. |

Unless you are going haute horlogerie, just because a movement is “in-house” doesn’t make it a “Ferrari”. Well, I suppose the marketing and AD salespeople might want customers to think otherwise. ;-) In the end, I wear watches for myself and not to “brag”, so what matters to me is performance and reliability, and any top-level ETA will be as good as any regular Panerai “in-house” movement (I put that last word in quotes, because in reality, Panerai movements are just modified Richemont corporate movements). |

Just as there is nothing wrong with a Chevy V8--there isn't anything particularly special about it either. |

Wish they kept on using 6497s. Sometimes I feel like selling my new Pams and just go with a classic like a 005. |

Nice write up Cru. I haven't seen both side by side so I wasn't aware of the difference. It seems like Panerai is getting away from deployant clasps on their pieces and moving towards everything coming on a pin buckle. They also have made many of the stock OEM straps that come with their pieces calf rather than gator.

Sold my 88 back in '06; glad I did and have never looked back. I'm not surprised to see Panerai is still using Swatch movements. Ridiculous for the price.

I don't know a lot about Panerai, but I've heard and read about Service issues with Panerai. Some people are happier with an ETA movement because they are so much easier to get serviced. I've heard parts are difficult to get (time wise) for in house movements. Also, not everyone will/can work on In house movements. Having said that, I have an in house movement. And having said that, I'm sorta dreading when service time comes.
