3185 running erratically

I just got back from a visit with a watchmaker who I have a good relationship with. He put my F serial Explorer II with the 3185 on the timer.

With the caseback on it was running all over the place, then would settle down. It has been serviced a couple of times, last in 2010, so I know its about that time anyway, but after he removed the case back to take a look, it settled down to well within spec, about as good as you could ask for it to run in all positions with the exception of dial down, which was +8s.

He did not recommend servicing right now, but another watchmaker at home looked, saw the same behavior, but recommended service soon. (For what it's worth, the one at home will be the one working on it but he wasn't pushy.)

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Is this typical of this movement? Is a service absolutely dire? Thanks in advance for any input!

I'd have to see it in person to judge whether it needs a service or not.
8 years is definitely a good service interval, I'd be quite happy with that.

I’m definitely happy with that interval and will have it serviced soon no matter what. Thanks for replying. Anything sound funky about it running fine without the caseback on?

Did place it properly on the timer? I can get funky results with a caseback on if the mic in the timer is having trouble to pick up the sound.

Demagnetize caseback and retest.

Most synthetic lubricants have a shelf life of 6yrs hence the service interval. At 8 I would not worry too much about the erratic reading either way... unless its still doing that after a full overhaul.
