Have You Ever Hosted a Foreign Exchange Student?

In 1996 while my oldest daughter was in high school, we hosted a student from Sweden for a year. She lived with us and attended the local high school, then spent the summer with us. While some have difficult or neutral experiences with exchange students, we grew to love CS like one of our own. Taking her to the airport to return to Sweden was one of the saddest days of our family life ever.

We promised to remain in contact, and thankfully, she remains like one of our daughters. She became a lawyer and has traveled the world, but she visits us in Minnesota and our family has traveled to Sweden to visit her. Little did we know back then that we all would adopt each other as family for the rest of our lives.

Have any of you ever hosted an exchange student? How was your experience? Do you maintain contact? This is CS today in a photo taken on the West Coast of the US.

Yes, my family hosted two female students ( seniors in high school) in Hawaii, both situations we took them in after they were with another families that had issues. One was from Thailand and was an absolute gem, she was with us 8 months. This was in 2000 -2001 and we still keep in touch. The second student was in 2002 and from Japan. She started off OK, but quickly went down hill and we felt we were just a rest stop for her running around and partying. It was only 5 months and we were very glad when she left and have not kept in touch. It was a good experience, but would not do it again. Cheers, Tim

Wow that's really nice, you have enhanced each other's lives. It's wonderful you have remained close.

I have never done it, but have heard stories like this before. Well done!

It's ready for you. Just in time to help with fall chores.

My grandparents hosted a student from Italy in 1960s. She brought her family to see us many times over the years. To this day we consider her to be part of our extended family.

Have You Ever Hosted a Foreign Exchange Student?

We did this twice in conjunction with a local church that hosted an exchange student program situated in France. Our daughter was a teen and this was a Summer-only term designed to give the French students a glimpse of US “new world”. So in a way it was like a Big Sister program.

We took the students on vacations and cultural excursions to help understand the Southern idea of America. It was a glimpse for us too...

After a couple of years our daughter outgrew her interest in the Summer program and we lost touch with the exchange students. But it’s great to see you have kept that connection.

When I was a teenager my next-door neighbor hosted a smoking hot volleyball player from Japan.

We dated and almost got married in college, but she was looking for a man with a richer family.

Glad to know you had a wonderful experience. The way things usually go with me I run the risk of hosting a male student from Senegal with mental issues who likes to walk around the house naked.

That's a great story, Joey. It's nice how she became a part of the family.

I wanted to host a nice young Swedish girl but the wife vetoed it. Can't imagine why?

We had an au pair from Canada.

Sadly no more contact. Can’t even find her on FB anymore. Used to have some contact on fb.

That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age. Matthew McConaughey as Wooderson in Dazed and Confused
