Maybe the terminology should be: collectors vs. consumers.
As the OP pointed out, going to an AD to buy a new currently-in-production Patek is not really collecting, but rather consuming. That's simply buying a luxury item you like and want and have the means to do so. There's no special artistry or talent in that. All it takes is cash. No different than buying a new Porsche 911 at the dealer. On the other hand, hunting relentlessly to buy vintage, out-of-production rare and distinctive Pateks is collecting. This requires knowledge, understanding and diligence to ferret out undervalued and under-the-radar pieces in unusual places. Yes, I know it's cool to fancy oneself a "collector". The reality is many of us are not collectors, we're just consumers of high-end watches that we like. Some people spend their disposable income on sports cars, or luxury vacations, or fancy dinners, or designer clothes. Others spend it on watches. And there's nothing wrong with that. |

I think this is a good question and I don't think I am either. I might be a informed watch consumer.

Connoisseur/afficianado though given more funds and time (no pun intended), would like to be a collector.

I always thought of myself as a watch enthusiast or hobbyist but I guess in the last year or two I would probably subscribe to the definition of collector because for me the journey is about buying and selling watches to get to a place or a collection where you are settled, and that's really where I am now, I have my grail collection. I could add a piece or two here and there and I have but these are incidental or staving off boredom purchases.
I don't equate being a collector as a supercilious way of describing someone who buys only rare pieces or very expensive pieces, the last few years have taught me that chasing exclusivity and money, to put it bluntly, is all rather superficial or pandering; if your grail collection cost five grand but that is truly your grail collection then you are a collector. |

So after some thought on the matter, I must be a collector, as I keep adding and never sell
Maybe I'll start trading up to the more complicated peices, if so does that make me a connoisseur? |

To a point, but then if you are satisfied why go on? No one uses the word collector in the sense of collecting otherwise everyone on this forum is a collector, no there is that implied superiority to being a collector which is why nearly everyone here says they are not when literally they clearly are. Yes, it's nice to be humble but I think it can get rather ridiculous when on a dedicated watch forum almost no one says they are a collector, so if you've been seriously collecting watches for a few years and are moving towards an end goal or have reached it, then you should call yourself a collector.

I'm at eight watches at the moment, which is getting to the upper limit. The two areas which have got me wondering are: 1. GMT vs 5524G It's a 16710 with a 3186 movement. A classic that I grew up admiring. I'm considering a 5524G to fill the casual GMT slot. I liked it on the wrist more than I thought I would. I've only seen the R model so far, so the decision depends on how the white gold one looks in the flesh. 2. Sub vs Yacht Master Rhodium dial (116622) vs IWC Aquatimer I have the Sub and Aquatimer. Again the Sub is a classic watch I admired growing up, but I love the Aquatimer. It's the Jacques Cousteau model with the blue dial, and it's so unique compared to other divers and has such three dimensionality to the dial. The rhodium Yachtmaster has caught my eye, it's really a more beautiful Sub, so I think the Sub would have to go before I bought one. The risk is I have no need to sell and love the Rolexes, but there are worse problems than having a lot of watches that you love. |

This seems very credible. Isn't 'enthusiast' the most common description amongst us, that sounds like aficionado to me.

I'm going to go with collector...bought a few out of production hard to find pieces, one at auction...and I've been buying new models with an eye to keep them forever...

Since the Fatninja didn't like my dragon comment. I think I am an enthusiast with a very grinchy feel. Kinda like a scrooge kind of collector.
