Rust on 2018 watch
Hi guys,
I'm a bit annoyed about the state of my Speedie after less than 2 years of ownership (June 2018). As you can tell from the picture below, several small spots of rust/corrosion have appeared underneath the bezel. The spots themselves are not super big, but I'm concerned about how wide the area is already. This is a first owner watch, with which I never swim, nor shower. The most water it has seen in less than 2 years is some light and cautious handwashing. I'm honestly stunned that this could happen so early on. Normally I'd ring my local dealer, but under current lockdown condition, no such luck. Therefore, I wanted to ask you two questions: 1. Do you expect this could be covered under warranty? 2. Is this an issue - would this warrant a service? If so, can this be resolved without a case change? In advance, I thank you for your insights. |

Have you tried soap and water? You're sure it's corrosion and not coffee?

What the heck, I would not expect that to happen.
Let’s see if more people chime in. But for now, yes, try the soap and water thing. Hopefully it’s just a stain of some sort. |

Definitely shouldn't happen. I would think Omega wants that back asap to investigate.

Totally agree. This shouldn't have occurred. Let Omega have the watch, but not right now because it'll just sit for weeks without being examined. It wouldn't surprise me if there is corrosion inside the watch, also.

Relax, it’s stainless steel so can’t rust. Mine picks up all kind of dirt, dust, crust under that lip there. Take a good toothbrush and give it a scrub. I have seen the speedy get used and abused and they are one of the sturdiest watches out there.

This could be a dumb question, but has it been exposed to any harsh chemicals? Maybe it's a reaction with the stainless?

I can't see the pictures because they are blocked here at work. If it does not clean up well, then I'd go ahead and send an email to Omega requesting a service under warranty. Then, even if their service center doesn't open until after your warranty has expired (I don't know how long it was in the EU 2 years ago) you'll hopefully still be covered.
Everything I know first hand and have read from others, is that Omega is very responsive to warranty service requests, and you should have no issues.

I would give it a good cleaning with warm water and a tooth brush. It looks somewhat like a stain from food or soda. Let us know what the results are from the cleaning.

Just dirt. Give it a cleaning with mild soap and water and you'll be fine.

Highly unusual. Hopefully just a bit of grime.
I’d just like to point out that stainless steel (316, 904, whatever) can and will rust under certain conditions. On a watch you start thinking about things like seawater, chlorinated pools, and household cleaning products. A small crevice like that can hold on to a bit of liquid for quite some time. Always a good idea to rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly. |
