French and German friends, we are with you.

This one has to hurt more because you lived through the first one and know what's coming. (I was "stuck" in Europe from January through May before I was able to get home to the USA, so I sympathize.)

How will you spend your November? Learn a new hobby? (Perhaps making voodoo dolls!?) Eat more? Eat less? (Because exercise will be more difficult.) Sleep more? Sleep less? And are you worried about your employment situation? Feel free to vent. It can't hurt.

We are all one against this virus. I'm sorry you gents and ladies and your families have to endure another long lockdown.

I'll bet money quite a few more of these lockdowns are on their way around the globe. Tough situation overall - but not a surprise at all.

New intel (WHO) suggests lockdowns are worse than normal common sense distancing, masks, etc., while keeping everyone employed, working, and in good mental states

Good Luck to all

Probably the best thing anyone could do is improve their health.

Yes more to come without doubt - England will be too soon I expect like other parts of the UK.

Not a bad idea whatsoever.

Serious question. Are we actually seeing a increase in the percentage of deaths or is there an increase in the number of cases due to the number of tests available? How does this compare to other strains of the flu?

Death rate seems to be declining (in USA at least) and will likely continue as medicine gets a better handle on things. Case increases we are seeing cannot be explained by testing alone, and as for the flu, COVID is deadlier by a fair margin and also far more contagious-which strains the healthcare system.

I can only speak for Germany and I am aware that France is mor drastic, but we are both not under lockdown!

Schools, Kindergardens Government Agencies and production sites remain open and so is retail (with certain limitations).

The recent measures target private contacts that must be drastically reduced to bring numbers down. We've had double infection rates every 7-10 days in the last weeks and if that goes on, our health systems will be overwhelmed in a couple of weeks.

Hotels bars, restaurant, all leisure places etc will be closed and are being compensated.

Thanks for the good wishes though!

Just look up excess mortality for the country of your choice.
The benchmark for excess mortaility include flu deaths from previous years and you can see what impact Covid has to the death statistic.

Thanks for the thought.

This lockdown is a bit less intense than the first one, including especially schools remaining open and places of work remaining open for business other than restaurants/bars/non-essential stores. For those directly impacted by the lockdown, there continues to be substantial economic aid provided.

As for the usual “TRF armchair pandemic experts” who can’t help but chime in on Covid, please try to remember that intensive care units of hospitals being overrun is a real fact. Having no more available beds and health care providers, despite active social distancing, mandatory masks and “common sense”, creates harder choices, IMHO, then closing Applebee’s or Gap for a couple of weeks.
