If one builds a specific type for the area, maintenance can be manageable. I’ve had two, and consider them for 35-55 year olds, unless one has the means to hire maintenance. There came a time when I tired of the routine. This change was not only due to a log home, but excessive property responsibilities in general and planning for the future.

This is brilliant and inspirational! I am going way small in retirement, especially if I am alone. Thinking of a very small cabin or a live in trailer where I can wander the country pulling my home with a vehicle.
Love what you have done!
Congrats!!

I just moved from a large-ish house with garage and yard to an 1125 sqft apartment in the city, I have a small storage unit with some seasonal items but it's really nice now that the stress of downsizing is over.

Someday I'd love your set up, about 1200 sqft with a 4 car garage? perfection my friend

I understand completely. I'm on part of a family farm and there is a lot to keep up, bush hog, etc.

The current lawn layout allows me to mow, trim, blow off the drive, and put everything back up in 1.5 hrs weekly.

For Christmas, or birthday, I’d like to suggest a lawn robot. You run a perimeter wire, program it and cut your maintenance to blowing the driveway and occasional wire trim around the edges. Totally freed my weekends up.

This is absolute perfection, and what my 'dream' home would look like. Bare essentials inside with tons of garage space to play in. Sadly even many newer homes built are taking the exact opposite approach.

Congrats and enjoy should be great simple living with that!!!

I should have done this 20 years ago !

It’s amazing how much is spent on useless home features to impress others or so a wife can impress friends.

Big thanks to everyone !

Thus far, ridding myself of more home to care for than needed, is like a weight being lifted off the back ! I’ll never go back to keeping up with “soccer mom and dad” down the street .................. fool’s game.

Hands down living the dream my friend!

I've been shopping for land off and on north of where I'm at currently to build something similar - want more property for myself but don't mind doing the work at my current age.

Agree with everyone keeping up with everyone else bull. Nothing more liberating than working hard and marching to the beat of your own drummer. Now that you've built it, anything that you'd change if you had to start from scratch?

Only one MINOR thing I would change, .................. drop the roof line over house section two feet. I maintained a single roof line for ease of construction. Although I took the approach of function over form, a lower roof line over the house section would have added a small amount of curb appeal.

Credit to you OP. Not for everyone but I think that's the point. Your house will be the envy of many.

After mowing yards for decades, I planted "no-mow" grass around the house we built in the country. It transitions into the natural grasses in the evergreen woods. It grows very thick, but only to a certain length. It then swirls into tufts. Very resistant to weeds. I took these photos today. The grass hasnt been cut for over a year. You see a lot of this type of grass on the north shore of Lake Superior. Very much enjoying never mowing the lawn.

That looks really great. I haven't seen that in my part of the country, I wonder if it would grow here in a dry climate.

We were told that the no-mow grass is quite drought tolerant. It also does well in a variety of temperature ranges.

This post didn’t age well. My no-mow grass was ruined by last year’s drought.

Now it is truly maintenance free. A win win in my book!

Perfect.
I've always told anyone who'd listen that if it weren't for my bride I would build a pole barn with lift, heat and bathroom facilities and simply park a camper inside to sleep in. My dog would have free roaming privileges of course.
Trucks, motorcycles, cigars and general tinkering of all sorts would abound.
But alas my wife likes having an actual house to live in so it's just an idea best kept in my head at this point.

That…and learning Joey’s lawn got destroyed. (Sorry Joey)

Oh…and Paul wanting to move into Bill’s RV sitting inside the imagined pole barn. (Sorry Paul)

All said in the spirit of fun.

I remember this post, thanks for triggering my mind, love it.

Funny thing about people obsessed with money is, only those who too are obsessed take mild notice in a rotunda of toxicity, however others like you are the ones at peace.
