Haven’t used one, but know they’re pretty much the pinnacle. Unless you’re a highly skilled barista (ie not the garden variety cafe tyro, but a real-deal, nerdy pro), things like variable flow rate and playing around with temperature for flavour profiling are much more than what is needed.

I hope you are feeling better btw.

Wait a minute. Are you telling me you’re going to order the most expensive version of something on a whim?

I don’t believe you

Never used one, but have had a couple shots pulled on one by a legit barista. Lots of potential there for sure. But not really a good first espresso machine. It's like buying your first car as a 16 year old driver and getting a Dodge Viper manual transmission and disabling the nanny features. They do look nice though

That my friend would be a pot filler. Don’t knock it until you try it.

Love the very clean setup too!

Love the setup. How is the monolith treating you? I was looking at one before I bought the Eg-1 but I’m too impatient for the lottery process.

Thanks. Yes, on the wall, above the range, is a pot filler. Convenient for pastas for sure!

Thanks. The Monolith is great. I just got it a few weeks ago so still getting it seasoned and dialed in but it’s super efficient. Zero retention (and with a little RDT - no static). Also, super quiet. So far I’m a fan. The Eg-1 was a contender for me as well but I was fortunate enough to score the Max without any issue.

How are you liking the Eg-1?

The quality and machining is amazing. It has really allowed me to experiment with light roast single origins.

The only knock I have on it is the size, but I can over look that based on performance. I must say the monolith dimensions are so much more appealing.

Not to mention how great the Linea looks in white. Well done.

Surely one does not have to be a "LEGIT BARISTA" to own and use one of these I would think..? :) Some of these grinders look to be really awesome top notch grinders...

Buy one and see how your "expresso" tastes. Report back.

I would agree. I’ve never used a slayer but I‘m sure you could pull some pretty good espresso shots without being a pro. I’d start by focusing on dialing in grind size and pulling some standard 9 bar shots. The nice thing about that machine is that once you get the standard variables dialed in (temp, grind size, weight, time, etc...), you could then start exploring and using it to its full potential. But you don’t need a slayer to pull good quality shots. It does look bad ass though.

On the grinder, you definitely want a good quality one in order to get the full potential out of that espresso machine. A crap grinder would make that slayer pointless.

To be fair, I should have used a more appropriate analogy. Hard_Six makes a good point. Maybe think of a Slayer like your M10 with a 50 Noctilux. You can in fact set it to f/8, line up the hyperfocal, set auto-ISO and auto-SS and get a perfectly great photo. Similarly you can use some default settings on a Slayer and pull a perfectly good shot, presuming you have good beans and a finely tunable and consistent grind.

for the record, i've been pulling shots at my house on my machine with my grinder for....6 years now? something like that. used a new tamp this morning ( https://prima-coffee.com/equipment/b...1mb58-ba-hu-sp ) and choked my machine. Couldn't believe it.

Dustin, you've been working out too much maybe I've choked mine a couple times when I switch beans. The bummer about choking a spring lever is that you have to wait awhile for it to depressurize, otherwise you're getting a very hot, grainy and messy bath

I thought the pump in my machine had died. I was so confused and bummed and slightly panicking.

Since you’re in Slayer territory, might as well take a look at Kees Van Der Westen...

I don't know that I could produce better Espresso with the Slayer or the Speedster but I sure as hell would enjoy looking at them on my bench.

When I have work I’ll do a quick Nespresso. If it’s a day off, drip chem ex to sip slowly.

Thanks for the help again team. Been doing a lot of reading and watching YouTube, and finally decided on a Profitec Pro 700 V2 (dual boiler). I ordered a Niche Zero grinder while I was at it, but until that arrives, I’ll have to make do (for at least two weeks) with my Lido handgrinder, much like Matt did. Now to set this thing up...

Now to get yourself a ridge-less basket and a 58.4mm tamp. And a naked portafilter.

That could be the next move and sounds like a popular upgrade. Will see how I get on with the Niche Zero (NZ) grinder. Finally got my Lido hand grinder dialled in, pulling a decent looking (but not particularly great or complex tasting) slow, syrupy pour. But my goodness, the Lido struggles here and it really constitutes slumming it till the NZ arrives! (Lido is great, btw, for filter coffee, but ill-suited for espresso I have learned.)

Gotta say: the steam pressure from this Profitec is incredible. It’s been six and a half years since I quit being a barista, and this machine really challenged me to make silky milk. I am gonna go buy four litres of the cheapest milk tomorrow and just find my way with it again. Failing that, the steam pressure can be adjusted down, but who wants less!
