Buying online to save a $

I am new to online purchasing and I was wondering if anyone here would buy a watch on ebay if the seller has good feedback?

I think that several members have purchased successfully on line.

But, we also have several members that were burned badly..

So, in the end, it is up to you to do your homework before you commit any hard earned cash.

I think that if you know what your doing you can get a sweet deal off Ebay...however like Larry said you really gotta know your stuff or you can get seriously hosed.

I have bought twice on ebay. Received perfect brand new in the box Rolex both times and at a big discount off MSRP.

I had a counterfeit that watchmakers thought was real. Rolex found the bracelet and case fake. Seller had near perfect feedback.

Another company with absolute perfect feedback took my trade and then claimed in their listing they bought the very same watch from an AD. (It was my watch, I sold it to them as an individual and they made their re-sale listing sound better by claiming it was from an AD).

I have purchased a "meticulously inspected" and "just serviced" Rolex with both dried and corroded parts.

Many of the people who think they did great on eBay really never fully check the integrity of the watch.

I can say that the bigger sellers- once they are caught- do refund.

Sellers play a numbers game- must people never check the watch out the way a TRF person would.

Lots of non-original replacement links and 100% fake bands out there, too.

Having survived without loss of money, I can only say be very cautious.

With eBay there's a difference between thinking you have an authentic Rolex and actually having one.

I'd go with a reputable TZ or watchnet seller before going to ebay.

Or pre-owned from Alan Furman, which is here in Maryland. Their pricing is about what you would find on TZ or ebay, but with a warranty.

On e-Bay are Rolex sellers who have an account 4 or 5 years old and have like 5 transactions. That to me is HIGHLY suspicious.

I have been on e-Bay for 8 years, am not a heavy user at all and even I have about 600 feedbacks.

Someone offering up a TT Submariner with 8 FB's?...I would stay away.

I've bought all 4 of my Rolexes on e-Bay. But I did a lot of homework first. Nevertheless it still takes nerves of steel. If you do it right, you can get some great deals. But it's not for the faint of heart.

As Larry said, in the end, it is up to you to do your homework before you commit to the purchase. And the cardinal rule is: Buy the seller, not the watch. You only want to deal with someone with hundreds of positive feedbacks as a seller of high end watches.

I purchased ALL of my (and my wife's) Rollies and many other items on eBay, and have had nothing but positive outcomes. You will have to do more than just rely on the seller's feedback, though. You will have to be armed with concrete information about what you are buying, and ask questions when you are unsure of any aspect of the auction.

Vigilance, knowledge and patience (waiting until the right situation develops) will pay big dividends when dealing with auctions on eBay.

Let's put it this way: the pro's buy watches they SEE in person. So, IMHO, either Rolex AD(try for discount, they can't shoot you for asking) and/or try to buy out of your state to save sales tax of 5 or 6 percent OR buy from someone you've known for a long time and trust. Ebay? Not for newcomers or non-experts vis a vis Rolex.
