Cleaning a 56 year old watch
The watchmaker that has overhauled (replaced case tube and stem, gaskets, lubed ,cleaned, and replaced the crystal) will not guarantee that my 1953 Oysterdate is waterproof. He says it's too old to guarantee it's waterproof. Now I'm afraid to wash it. How do I just get the sweat, and grime from daily wearing off it?

I'd be very surprised if he couldn't test the water resistance of the watch. Most watchmakers have the means. Sounds like it should be fairly water resistant now, at least for the purpose you envision if not swimming with it (and it could well be fine for that too). Call him up and ask if he could at least test it for you. He probably meant he couldn't offer a guarantee how long water resistance will last.

My 1954 ref 6294 had a similar service. It passed a pressure test.
With the parts that were replaced on your watch and proper assembly, there is no reason that it should not be waterproof. Age should not be a determining factor. Mark |

The gaskets, case tube and crystal were replaced on my 1968 DJ. It passed a pressure test with flying colors.
I've had no water issues and I shower with it, etc.. |

50's T-bird
I've had mine serviced several times by various Rolex and non-Rolex folks and never had a problem. I've also never had anyone say that such a thorough service wouldn't make it waterproof.
