What makes the Explorer II 1655 worth what is it now?

My father owns one, given as a gift for his 18th birthday (he is 59 atm), the case is 1975 and the band is 1977 acording to the numbers printed.

Making a quick look it seems those timepieces prices are in the 15k+ ?

Can you post a photo?

Like all vintage Rolex sports models, it’s about supply and demand. They ain’t making them anymore, so prices climb as the best examples vanish. The 1655 is an especially cool design and unique in the Rolex lineup.

To answer your question.... hype makes them worth what they are going for now. People say that they weren't popular when they were available so that makes them rare. Buuuut they're not rare at all. Someone nicknamed the 1655 the "Steve McQueen" and for some reason the name stuck... buuuut McQueen never wore one.

So the recent inflation on price is simply due to hype and people suddenly deciding they have to have one. That said, they are very cool watches and are very different looking than any other Rolex model. I'd love to have one.

And.... they're a vintage piece now. People go nuts over good pieces.

Wast super popular in the past. Like vintage cars things people didn’t care for are highly sought after now.

Harder to find than a 1675 or a 5513, and the dial is striking.

in a sea of submariners and gmts, the 1655s are very different looking and very cool in person actually, at the current rate of appreciation of said subs and gmts, I'm nearly surprised they have not stepped up even higher ... yet ;)

it was the first rolex i wanted - but kept getting overbid, past my comfort level back then.

I had kind of given up - but then one of my friends wanted to buy one of my DayDates - so I figured it was a good starting place.

Totally love mine. And it really just is so different from all the other models, great weight on wrist.

Demand for vintage Rolex models has driven up the value since (as we say), they aren’t making any of those anymore.

Apologies in advance to anyone who may take offense...and I've no doubt I may be in the minority...but, I've never "gotten" these watches. I think they look like toys. They remind me of what TV and movie studios in the early 1970s thought a watch "of the future" might look like. Like something you'd see in "Logan's Run" or "Battlestar Galactica".

yeah it is an awesome watch, the only thing I HATE is that the red pointer got swaped the last time it was sent to the Rolex repair center (Only one in Mexico), didn't askedd for it, bah.

The original had the red color somehwat faded like the one from iangbris.

You’re not alone. I find the “Disco Dial” almost unfit for purpose, so illegible is it.

Yes, my signature betrays the presence of a few in my collection, but I can enjoy purchasing unusual pieces / full sets and the academic interest of different versions without necessarily wanting to wear every one.

This is exactly WHY I love this reference. Funkiest, most unique vintage Rolex out there. And I liked those movies too.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

That's like saying, "I don't understand why people like Subs...they look like something James Bond would wear." lol

They have a look of 70’s funk and Logan’s Run/ Battlestar Galactica. That’s what appeals to me. A grail watch.
