Both are nice, I think the sector dial is more casual while the non-sector adds a more formal touch to the 5296. Difficult decision.

Sector dial would be my choice. Just more interesting. Does the small movement in the calatrava line up bother you at all? ?

The 5296 sector dial has the 324 SC the same as a 5711.
I'd go with the sector dial.

Patek is known for putting smaller movements into larger cases, but some executions are better than others. See what I mean here? Don't know, but this has just been a turnoff for me on modern calatravas.

I think the 5070 looks smaller. The really small one is the 5524.

Lol... quite true. 5070 I just feel they did a great job at working around it with the step bezel and so on. 5196 is unfortunately the worst offender in my opinion (and I love the look of the 5196p).

Non sector.

BTW I also love the 5196P look and thankfully it has a solid platinum caseback so you can't see the really small 215 PS movement in it.

I wonder if the 5196 and 215 movement will be retired. The 5196P seems very expensive. Also, is the 5227 considered too large for a Calatrava dress watch? I'd go 5227R for a Calatrava.

Yes. A sapphire caseback would not work on it for sure! I find the 5196P so damned attractive otherwise.

Who knows? 5196P can be had for 20k.... I've considered one more than once!

Gives it a bit of weight.

Not a fan of mismatched movements and cases, nor of the sector dial on the Calatrava.

I went with non sector as I preferred the cleaner look.

I vote sector. But I would not turn down the more traditional version.

Sorry for the bump but I’m looking at the 5296G non sector white gold model and came across this thread. So non sector gets my vote.

Does anyone know the history or purpose of the sector dial?
Or is it just for better legibility?

It actually dates back to the 1930's. Been in their line in some iteration for quite awhile.
