I should stop asking strangers about their watch.

There I was today on Barcelona’s most upmarket shopping street in the Adidas shop (I know it’s a contradiction but we will move on) I was looking for some new kicks btw. As it happened the bloke next to me was wearing the new Pepsi on the jubilee. My subconscious watch obsessed brain took over thinking “well, we must talk about this” Sooo, I said, “that’s the new GMT Pepsi, very rare and very nice, how did you get it?” At this point the guy looked at me suspiciously and waved me away. I know this city has a lot of thieves as I have lived here for fifteen years so understand people’s caution.I don;t blame the guy or think badly of him. My lesson was to never mention anything to anyone about their watch if I don;t know them or if it’s not with friends or a watch buying environment.
ANYWAY – anyone else had any similar awkward experiences?

My opinion is it is rude to be asked. But then, I'm a misanthropic curmudgeon who doesn't like people, so consider the source.

i was at the Lion King this afternoon with my son in the west end (london). Some guy in the bathroom wearing a 44mm RG ROO tried to talk watches with me at the urinal . Totally weird but i guess its ok since it was only my watch he was checking out. Come to think about it, i have no excuse that i even know what watch he had on. Mine was a BLRO FWIW.

Its the situation, not necessarily the conversation being off limits.

Critical in this situation is determining whether the hand with the watch was the same hand doing the business.

This made me chuckle

It's much better to talk about your watches while urinating than ummmm " other " things??

A good thing he was looking at your wrists than " down there " haaaa!!

I only talk to strangers in restrooms if they offer me a candy bar first.

Man, you do NOT engage someone in conversation when they have their "Valuables" (no, not the watch) exposed.

Me too, one of the reasons I shy away from the high attention Rolex's, I hate wean randoms approach me in public and gives me random comments.

Makes me feel sorry for celebrities who have to endure this all the time.

It is in reality...

It's not in luxury watches... but in watches "general" it is...

to 99.9% of people it is, and to most Rolex owners is also is. The sub set of people who dont consider 10K for a watch to be a lot of money is exceedingly small.

Expensive is a relative term. I’m not saying he needed to chat your ear off but he could have been a bit nicer

It is an expensive watch. All Rolexes are.

Yes, it’s all subjective and relative etc etc, but generally speaking, ask most normal people, wealthy or not, and they will tell you; thousands spent on a watch is expensive.

Standing in line to check in for a plane at the Nice Airport (France), a guy standing not far from me and drawing up for the same plane, continuously watched at my Hulk. He finally approached me and asked to have look at that very special and hard to find Rolex. The guy was very friendly and pleasant... we started a quite long conversation about our common passion.

I certainly qualify for the curmudgeon part, but I didn't think I was eligible, seeing as how I wear a six-digit model.

Totally agree ..I may have at that point swore at him....and said the c word preceeding with the word ignorant...no need for it ...if you can't be nice to others then don't wear nice watches

I am still awaiting a watch enthusiast to say to me that's a fine Rolex Air-King you are wearing there while stood at the urinal...I would say I love it but wish I had a bigger sea dweller but at 40mm I am as happy as a man with a 40mm submariner as it's the same size ish

So people who do not like to be approached by randoms asking how they got their watch, should wear ugly watches?

If I had waved you away and you had started swearing and said the c word I would think you where some crazy psychopath.

Not everyone like to share personal information to randoms, and not everyone have the time to entertain nosy randoms either. I think if someone do not want to use their time on you, then you should have the decency to respect that.

No one should ever just wave a person away it is a sign of pure ignorance ....
To me it is a sign of get away I am better than you....it is from victorian times and from the raj
It is wrong

I will be honest I may not be rich ..but I am an honest law abiding person

I have seen children ..look at me and see me ad a waste of time picking up rubbish as a job and even say why do you do that when you can
Earn a pound less on benefits ... then I repeat benefits are not for me...I have been looked down upon all of my life by being brought up on a UK council estate by a single parent mother but I have 3 things in my life ..
1 a wife who loves me
2 ... 2 is correct a Tudor black bay red and a Rolex Air-King compared to other persons on this site they are rubbish watches ...but to me they are mine bought and payed for..it may have taken 6 years on minimum wage to get them but I love my twins..I have scrimped and saved for them......they are my girls and I love them
3. I am a son of a minor 3rd generation I could have been a minor myself but Margaret Thatcher finished the mines .when I was 16 and ready to go down the mines at the age of 16.she put 250.000 men in the north east of England on the dole (benefits) I am too proud to do that and if someone was to shoo me away I would sware at them ...it
No one will ever shoo me away its a derogatory remark it is the low of the low.

Made me chuckle and smile mate - agree about the Victorian/Raj comparison, low beyond low. Maybe us being British that sort of dismissive wave hits home a little nastier, what with class divide being our thing! Better to be sworn at than waved away.

Depending on the look given and the way I was dismissed, could see myself mouthing off, in my eyes that’s less disrespectful than being waved away - but I’d approach a person a little more gently too, “nice watch” is about the limit before I’d feel I was being intrusive. Let the conversation live or die by the response given.

At the end of the day, people are people and some of us are d***s, and I guess some of us are nice but not in the mood, not good with people or don’t have the time in that moment.

OP - I don’t think you should stop trying to start watch conversations, you never know you you could be asking, if it were me we could end up talking 40 minutes and you’d have to make an excuse to get away and back to shopping

Rocket Launcher you do understand that randoms does not know that you have this background and that you may have inferiority complexes or other issues with this? Had some random waved me away after I had approached him in the mall and asked him how he got his watch, I would not look at that as any more rude then approaching him like I did. I would just walk away not thinking more about it. Just like you have all this complexes about being waved away, he may have this complexes about randoms feeling they have the right to approach and question him just because he wears the watch he enjoys. Or if it was a crowded store he may not want to talk about how he got his $10,000 or 20,000 Rolex with 15 random people around listening. One should not have to wear ugly cloths, watches and so on to be left alone by strangers wean out shopping at the mall. It is all about perspective and what one finds rude or not. To me I think people should respect that other peoples privacy and comfort zones may vary from yours.

This (video below) is what may happen wean randoms approach you about your watch. Maybe it even was the same guy, so from experienced he have learned to wave randoms asking about his watch away.
