I should stop asking strangers about their watch.

There I was today on Barcelona’s most upmarket shopping street in the Adidas shop (I know it’s a contradiction but we will move on) I was looking for some new kicks btw. As it happened the bloke next to me was wearing the new Pepsi on the jubilee. My subconscious watch obsessed brain took over thinking “well, we must talk about this” Sooo, I said, “that’s the new GMT Pepsi, very rare and very nice, how did you get it?” At this point the guy looked at me suspiciously and waved me away. I know this city has a lot of thieves as I have lived here for fifteen years so understand people’s caution.I don;t blame the guy or think badly of him. My lesson was to never mention anything to anyone about their watch if I don;t know them or if it’s not with friends or a watch buying environment.
ANYWAY – anyone else had any similar awkward experiences?

My opinion is it is rude to be asked. But then, I'm a misanthropic curmudgeon who doesn't like people, so consider the source.

i was at the Lion King this afternoon with my son in the west end (london). Some guy in the bathroom wearing a 44mm RG ROO tried to talk watches with me at the urinal . Totally weird but i guess its ok since it was only my watch he was checking out. Come to think about it, i have no excuse that i even know what watch he had on. Mine was a BLRO FWIW.

Its the situation, not necessarily the conversation being off limits.

Critical in this situation is determining whether the hand with the watch was the same hand doing the business.

Me too, one of the reasons I shy away from the high attention Rolex's, I hate wean randoms approach me in public and gives me random comments.

Makes me feel sorry for celebrities who have to endure this all the time.

You must be very rich to make this statement.

It is in reality...

It's not in luxury watches... but in watches "general" it is...

to 99.9% of people it is, and to most Rolex owners is also is. The sub set of people who dont consider 10K for a watch to be a lot of money is exceedingly small.

Expensive is a relative term. I’m not saying he needed to chat your ear off but he could have been a bit nicer

It is one third of the price of a new Volkswagen Golf GTI. Not the end of the world.

Guilty of looking at wrists and talking to strangers about their watches. I should have learned my lesson the first time because I’m almost positive I inadvertently called someone out with a fake Rolex just because I wanted to talk watches. It was such an awkward moment.

This past weekend I saw a 80 something gentleman wearing a beautiful vintage Speedmaster. I politely remarked “nice Speedmaster, I own one myself”. He said he had owned it for over 50 years and only had it serviced once. It was well used, but still beautiful in my eyes. He was a Medical Doctor and I just thought the stories that watch could tell. The conversation lasted two minutes and he politely held out his hand and said “Have a nice day”, which was my que to buzz off.

I did have a waiter at a restaurant say “excuse me, sir......that is my dream watch” referring to a 16610 I was wearing that night. My wife just rolled her eyes. She’s not a watch person and doesn’t get what all the fuss is about.

Nice watch, wow nice wallet, like the jacket, and that’s what I heard from a TSA guy. I walked away, feeling like I “was the man”, then it hit me”, I am “DahMan”...

In my opinion the jubilee and the colours are not right for this watch. The BLNR and the CHNR are the only game in town for the GMT.

I have TSA Precheck specifically to avoid those comments.

He probably has heard that a million times already, which is why he waved you off.

Guess maybe I'm lucky, but anyone I've complimented or asked about their watch has been more than willing to share a story. Guess it could be awkward, which is why I always say "nice watch" before striking up a conversation.

If someone stopped and asked me about one of my watches I’d be happy to chat to them about it.

I can't imagine commenting on a stranger's watch (or shoes, or whatever), and only one person has ever commented on my shoes (AE Sanibels), never on a watch. Although I don't think I'd shoo a stranger away, a polite, "thank you" and little more would likely be my response.
