I pretty much always comment if I see a nice watch. A couple of discussion have happened in the hot tub at the health club. One guy had to take off his platinum Day Date to let me check it out. Nice watch although a 36mm one. Another had a nice looking watch on, I've known him for a bit and had noticed it but never asked about it. It turned out to be a nice looking Tag Heuer Carrera. He was a bit embarrassed by it saying he wished he had a better watch. It looked nice from where I sat. We talked a bit about watches. His next was going to be a Breitling. Not a bad way to relax after a mile swim.

Just try to study your environment to know exactly what you to say, i'm sure with company of friends it shouldn't be a bad idea.

Eventually no one will ever talk if people like us are deterred by the negative.

And trust me, I’m at the point where I think basically everyone is a douche bag

The rewarding conversations you can have even just once in awhile make it well worth the try.

Yesterday my friend and I spotted a two tone DJ2 with arabic numerals. We had a long 20 min conversation about Rolex as a result. I never shy away form talking watches with a stranger.

I rarely see any luxury wrist watches around here. I fangirlled hard tbh.

I should stop asking strangers about their watch.

Recently a man stopped me to ask the time. I glanced at my watch and said 3.45. He then said “no i want to see it” and so I showed him the time on my watch. He peered closely at it and then moved on. I still am not sure if he was genuinely wanting to know the time or if he wanted to check out the watch.

For the OP, in a city notorious for tourist mugging, the reaction was understandably of suspicion and hostility. I would I would be a bit scared off too in that situation. Maybe he thought you were scouting to confirm if the watch was genuine before signalling to accomplices to do the mugging once he left the shop. Don’t be put off being friendly but - it depends on the environment and situation.

Even in forums most people are just WIs, the minority of them are savants.
It's high likely that someone with a Daytona, Nautilus or Royal Oak don't know much about horology and it's history.

Gentleman with BLNR on his right arm sitting next to me in business class on plane. I’m on his right so my Daytona C is on his side. His head is buried in his iPad. I’m going to sit here quietly and enjoy my adult beverage. It’s a long flight. I’ll see if he is willing to entertain any discussion or just wants to be left alone.

Exactly. It’s not like he started talking to him and then mentioned his watch. It’s more like he spotted his mark and called it out.

Granted, a good con man, thief would avoid talking about the watch but criminals aren’t the brightest bunch of people (in general). You just never know who you’re dealing with.

This made me think, my buddy is traveling today with has BLNR, I an sure that's not him but the funny thing is if it was he would be happy to talk to you but would definitely not know anything about watches. He bought his a few years ago because he kept seeing the AD's add on a billboard on 95 driving to his office. Was in our local AD for a gift for his wife and asked if they happen to have that blue and black Rolex watch on the billboard. They did and he bought it. He knows that it's a great watch but that's about it. Over beers at the beach this summer I was telling him how that watch is super hard to come by now and he had absolutely no idea about things in the watch world. When you do find someone who is its a fun conversation.
