Seamaster Sets Record for the Deepest Dive

Anyone else catch this today?

https://www.esquire.com/uk/design/a2...ve-watch-ever/

May 2019, undersea explorer Victor Vescovo successfully piloted his submersible Limiting Factor to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, which at nearly seven miles beneath the Pacific Ocean, set a new world record for the deepest dive. Vescovo's 4.6m-long, 3.7m-high craft was built by the US-company Triton Submarines, with the aim of having a vessel that could make repeated dives to any part of the ocean, with a 9cm-thick titanium pressure hull that can withstand 1,000 bars, the equivalent of 50 jumbo jets piled on top of it.

What wasn't known until now was that Omega’s new experimental dive watch, the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional, was strapped to the outside. (In fact, there were three Ultra Deep Professionals on the dive, codenamed FOD-X1, -X2 and -X3, standing for Full Ocean Depth – one on each of the main vessel’s robotic arms and one on the detachable lander vehicle. After a technical hitch meant that one of the robotic landers remained on the ocean floor for two-and-a-half days before being retrieved, its watch was still ticking).

Wrong forum, but I do like this new Omega. Maybe they’ll make some less extreme production versions?

Yes, I agree however it no longer leaves the accomplishment to Rolex alone. For those who justify their Rolex purchases by their depth accomplishments of the Deepsea Challenge this marks a distinct change.

So Omega has watches worn OUTSIDE of suits/vehicles at the highest point man has attained (Moon) and the lowest point (bottom of the Marianas Trench).

Yaa who cares if someone else comes up with another (best part of an inch) thick watch that can do it.

From the linked article (credit to author):

“Explorer Victor Vescovo set a new deep-diving record, reaching what is commonly known as the deepest point on planet Earth: Challenger Deep within the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean.

Vescovo descended in a submersible called DSV Limiting Factor, reaching a depth of 35,853 feet, which is 52 feet deeper than any manned dive, and beating a record made in 2012 by filmmaker and explorer James Cameron, who reached a depth of 35,787 feet on a dive in his submersible, the Deepsea Challenger.”

Isn’t the delta 66 feet, not 52 feet?

I agree, they went a few meters extra. Several decades too late really. Not sure why Omega would even bother. This is like that neighbor that after a few years of seeing your Xmas decorations copies your exact same design.
To me it screams little brother chasing big brothers accomplishments.

No, but would you really want to wear such a watch. Ironically, Omega might just sell it since they sure love thick unnecessary watches.

I sometimes think that anyone (prospective Omega or Rolex) buyers, if they’re basing their decision on what watch to buy based upon its ability withstand pressures over 300M are somewhat kidding themselves.

Beyond a certain limit it’s all dickwaiving. Like these guys.

I did exactly that when I bought my first Rolex, the original all black DSSD. Mistake! Didn't like the overall geometry of the watch and ended up trading it straight up for my 16710 GMT Master II BLRO.

Rolex is already crowned with the achievement of going to the deepest part of the Ocean, who cares if they went a little bit deeper.

Umm...people who care about the deepest? I love to see the different technical solutions each manufacturer comes up with to survive such pressure. Like F1, but for diving. Competition improves all competitors.
