That is why I like watches.

I love both Omega and Rolex.
Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is one of the most iconic watches.

I collected Omega for more than 20 years and over that period I used to think Rolex was a brand for those who could not tell the difference between quartz and automatic watches. Of course I changed a lot over the last ten years and nowadays I prefer Rolex without a shadow of a doubt and I'm only interested in vintage Omega.

I have always liked the Omega Seamaster Diver 300m in blue Reference 2220.80.00 and also the original Moon watch Speedmaster. However what keeps me from buying any of them is the Omega brand and how they manage it. I think they should stick to a few models and don't make much changes. However they have lots of models and they make lots of changes every year. Always something different. And they got lots of "limited edition" watches, seems to me that they make a limited edition watch every week. And that frustrates me a little about the brand. Because it is not very limited edition if they make thousands of each limited edition and so many limited editions that it is impossible to keep track, and also so many models change from year to year that even they become more limited then some limited editions. And the James Bond franchise, they milk it too much. Now James Bond usually uses two different Omega's in each movie, plus they make several new James Bond limited edition watches each year it seems like.

I think they should stick with a few lines with a few variations, keep the changes small and focus on improving the movement, overall quality and functionality every year instead of focusing on making tons of limited editions and variations every year. Quality over quantity. I used to consider Omega and Rolex as almost equals 10-15 years ago. But now I consider them equal to Tudor, and in 5 years maybe Tudor will pass them as well.

I’ve given omega several chances to win me over however there are several design flaws that they can’t seem to correct. I guess my largest gripe with some of their more attractive watches is the dang thickness. There are some gorgeous speedmasters and seamasters out there that are nearly 20mm thick?

Yes on both.

I don't look too much at potential financial appreciation in my watches. Sure, that'd be nice, but I view watches as an expense. That frees me to buy the watch I love the most.

I mean, I don't like what you wrote. And I certainly do not agree. But I was being completely playful.

I was going to write that if you feel this way, we can no longer be friends. But I thought that would be taking it too far.

So no, I was just trying to be funny.

Not sure if you got what I meant. I was admitting that I was wrong in many ways, so I think you can still be my friend.

This is actually a riot.

So I am in and out of TRF all day. Some times are more conducive to reading and responding than others. Sometimes, I actually save threads so that I can go back into it and spend the right time on it.

I briefly perused your original post. Loved it too. But I did not have enough time and I was on my phone. So I went back in to look at it last night, also on my phone, but while at home. And it was gone.

I was soooooooo looking forward to it.

Always love your perspective and posts. And I was SUPER interested in your history with Omega. The watch pic was awesome!!!!!! But I could only see it on my phone.

Any chance you have a copy of the text???

I would love to read it, but dont want to make you go through all that again.

We can talk about this topic when we get the chance to have a beer. I'm thinking about going to one of your GTGs in the future so we'll have a chance.

I love them both. They both have their pluses and minuses.

I prefer the Seamaster 2254.50 diver over the Sub. 15 years ago when I was looking for a good watch I really wanted to love the Sub but couldn't get over the flimsy bracelet and clasp. Also the legibility was not as good as on the Seamaster. When the bracelet of the Sub was finally upgraded they also increased the case/lug size, which killed it again for me. The dial of the Sub is iconic and the reason I want to like it. If they would just release a version with the updated bracelet and the smaller lug size I would be all over it. I do prefer the Sub over all the later iterations of the Omega diver.

I'm not into GMT watches (yet?) but I like the Rolex lineup better than Omega's GMT's. Nobody does GMT's like Rolex.

I prefer the Speedmaster over the Daytona. The Speedmaster has such a classic look. I like that it is hand wound as well. The Daytona just doesn't grab me although the ceramic bezel is a nice improvement. Plus the different lug widths and the screw down pushers would bug me.

I love the Datejust line, especially with the jubilee bracelet and the fluted bezel. The DJ41 is sublime. The Omega counterpart would probably be the Aqua Terra line. I never warmed to them and I don't like the arrow minute hand. Using sticks for both hands would make the watch look a lot better or at least use the arrow for the hour hand.

I think it's fair to say the Omega currently has the better tech - co-axial, high anti-magnetic, silicone hairspring, sapphire case back (and sides on the DeVille Hour Vision!) even some Tourbillons. Massive range so easy to find at least a couple of models that would suit most people's tastes.

Rolex are usually a bit thinner and easy to wear, a bit more refined, arguably better looking and a deserved reputation for reliability.

I think there's room for a Speedmaster and a Submariner in any collection.

This is my experience EXACTLY.

Too bad, because the new sub clasp is awesome.

When they first released the Planet Ocean, it was perfect.

Ever since they have been trying their best to destroy it with ceramics, “liquid metal” , Zr2O3, exebition Case backs, GMT function, increased thickness and increased cost of course.

It is a really ugly watch now, even in “plain” black. Very disappointing.

Agreed- I had a seamaster 300 which I tried to love, but it was way too thick and just didn’t feel right. I have a PO 600 that I sometimes wish was the 42 not 45mm- but it’s still a keeper

Aesthetically, i’d rather have a Seamaster chronometer than a Datejust.

Interesting topic. Once I thought my PO 43.5 8900 was going to be my be all and end all watch. I bought it new and thought it was a good "value", or much watch for the money compared to most Rolex models. However it was not lost on me that the watch depreciated quite a bit the first time I wore it. That realization actually pushed me into Rolex and I'm very happy wearing my BLNR and SD43, purchased from AD, and not too worried about value erosion.

I wear these quite a lot, but strongly favor the Speedy. At some point in the not-to-distant future, I will be picking up an Aqua Terra. I really find them to be handsome watches and definitely not thick, which I find to be a turnoff on the dive-rated Omegas!

I have two Omegas and one Rolex, I love vintage Omega and their heritage inspired new watches, I also love the Speedmaster.

I don't like all Omega watches though, many are definitely not for me but at least they are trying some new things
