I kind of get the whole “I don’t want to wear it” stuff as I used to be terrible, even as a kid I’d keep all my toys mint and put them back in boxes. And for what? So someone else could have them and ruin them. Same thing into alduthood, never driving nice cars, hardly wearing my best watches.

I’ve totally changed my way of thinking in recent years and actually use stuff. I think watching people die in my family in recent years just put things into perspective as to just how short life is and to actual enjoy my things how they were meant to be and not to keep mint for someone else to use.

Well said.

My explorer II is also aging the same way. Hands are less aged than markers. After researching, apparently this is common

[QUOTE=77T;8315730]Ironic coincidence because my Root Beer had age that way and people swore I had replaced the hands. The hands are open so the lume gets air from both sides instead of lying flat against metal.

Paul, I was wondering why the difference, makes sense about air on both sides of the hands. My watch is stone original, has probably been out of it's box a total of 4 weeks in all these years.
I'm trying to change my "saving ways" haha. Not getting any younger.

Will sunlight bleach patina?

Long term direct contact with metal affects the aging mechanisms and/or changes to the physical parameters of the luminescent paint. By itself, the ingredient in Luminova (Strontium Aluminate) is chemically and biologically inert. It doesn’t react with much.

But, when activated with a dopant (e.g. europium) it will emit ions and interact with metals in the WG plots with which it is in constant contact. But only a small fraction of the lume is in contact with metal on the edges of the hands.

Perhaps the local atomic surroundings of the optical active ion in the luminescent strontium may be interacting with one of the WG alloy metals in the plots. All I know is the earlier tritium active element ages far quicker and with greater yellowing than today’s lume.

That’s a beauty! Why keep in box all these years?
