the 15500 looks pretty great, other than I really wish they left automatic on the bottom or put something else there. The new indices are so contemporary and cool size wise.

If they decided to take away the printed (stamped) wording on the bottom, why couldn’t they decided to take all printing out and do with new gold applied name just like 11:59 on the new 15500. That was my first thought and wish. Maybe on some limited edition like QE will they decide to do it special, or wait another 3years for whole revamped 50th anniversary.

Checked out the 15500 in person this week at the NYC boutique...looks very nice...looks and wears a little larger than the 15400 I believe, but marginal.
Went in wearing my 15400: New one: Side by side: |

Thanks for sharing these. Very helpful comparison. Would you mind letting me know what your wrist size is?

Thx for the side by side pics, after seeing this, I think i will be keeping the 15400 a bit longer, when my 15500 gets in, I might wear it for a while then decide again. I just cant get over the fact that the outer marker is not on the tapestry dial anymore.

The outer marker on my ROC is not on the tapestry dial as well - not the end of the world. I also owned a 15400 and await my 15500 soon. |

Yeah, i think having both and wearing it for a while will give us opportunity to decide better, I regretted so called “upgrading” from 15300 to 15400, dont want to make the same mistake again.

Great pics! Side by side I like the dial layout and movement (rotor mostly) of the 15400 better.

The 39mm fits better on my wrist, I was on the fence leading up to buying the 15400 - but eventually the issue was solved by adding 1 1/2 link to the 15400.

I really like the 500 but the no text 'Automatic' on the bottom of the dial really does look strange now after some more videos/hd photos. The date although larger, the digit text is a bit weird also. Little to much angle than a softer text. Oh and the hollowed seconds hand is off putting also. But i probably would still buy with that much larger new calibre / caseback. The overall dial colour is pretty nice also. The ROC with the caseback in the next few years will be a hit if they dont mess around with the subdials / colours of dials to the point where it puts people off.

I see what you mean regarding the lack of text, creating more negative space at the bottom. After a period of certain time, I think you’ll appreciate the cleaner look. It IS strange initially at first. The ROC also has the hollowed seconds hand as well. |

AP 15400 vs 15500
Interesting to try on a 15500 today and I actually really liked it in person. From the photos I’d seen I previously thought the dial looked too plain compared to the 15400/15450 that I had been debating between. In reality the cleaner dial lets you more fully appreciate the beautiful dial...

15400 is perfect and balanced. 15500 is sparse and unbalanced.

I think the 15202 is the most balanced currently in production. The 15400 as a contender (for the fonts used and the Automatic on the dial). I also do feel the 15500 looks a bit naked without the Automatic word, and the font of the date wheel is clashing a tad with the Audemars Piguet font on top.

just been offered a 15500 on the brink of Christmas - Cannot believe it. The AD has teased me with a whatapp video of just the outer packaging and serial. Pick up tomorrow and cannot wait. Nice to have a incoming in the midst of the Rolex drought here in the UK.
This will be my first step in AP even when my boss has tried for many years to convert me. |

I waitlisted for the 15500 blue but decided to pull out after I compare the two closely. Still think the 15400 is an overall better design but this is of course subjective.

As a newcomer to the brand I prefer the cleaner look of the 15500; having said that I can imagine that for those who have grown used to the 15400 dial (either through ownership or photos) the lack of “automatic” on the bottom-half of the dial would be awkward. I also think, having compared both side-by-side in person, that the caseback (with larger movement and skeletonized rotor) of the 15500 is much prettier/more impressive than the 15400.
Great pics all around in any case! |

AP 15400 vs 15500
Currently own the 15500 blue. The new movement behind is nice and fits the case really well. But somehow, I don’t find the face of the 15500 as attractive/endearing as compared to the 15202 or 15400. Probably because of the lack of longer and slimmer hour markers which have been a part of an RO’s aesthetics... The 15500 now looks more like an ROC with its sub-dials removed and ended up with a rather empty dial. Starting to have serious thoughts on whether I would like to keep it or not

Sure it's not the profit that is pulling you ?
Like 99.99% of the flippers. The 15500 is by far the best AP RO ever made. Nostalgia aside
