Sub or Explorer II?

Want a new black faced sporty Rolex, and these two are my favorite. Can you guys give me your opinion on which one to get and why? THANKS!

Please consider black face of submariner date as the first choice.
It is the first step to rolex sport watches, and it can be first and last step!!!
Personally i will choose explorerII as second choice, but of course in white.

Laura is, as the Fonz would say, Correctomundo.

The Submariner is an icon. Even George Clooney wears one.

Clooney may wear an icon, the Sub, but he is not an icon. Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart now that is an icon!

EXPII is iconic, many serious adventurers have worn this watch.

I think Clooney is a good actor but not yet an icon.

Clooney is my generation's Cary Grant. Smooth and always pulled together, his Danny Ocean in Ocean's 11 sold that title of "icon" for me. The same can be said of Brad Pitt.

Different generations, different icons.

Please. Clooney is a good actor, but he will never be any generations Cary Grant. Grant had more class in his little finger than George Clooney has in his whole body. And Brad "Arm" Pitt? I'm not even going to go there.

As someone who works in the entertainment industry, my opinion is that movie stars will never again be cultural icons the way they were in Grant's day. This is, IMO, because of the way the media covers today's stars and how the public's obsession with them manifests itself.

Being a movie star used to come with allure and mystique. They lived in a world seemingly inaccessible to most of the public (it was a lot more challenging to travel from Middle America to LA for a long weekend) and their scandals were but cloudy rumors, not the subject of late night news everywhere.

Stars also weren't groomed to be 360 degree money-making machines. Stars are now brands, not cultural icons. That's fine with me, since I'm in tis business to make a living, but it's also why I don't think you'll ever see Grants or Bogarts again.

Love that Sub. This would hands down be my choice. I would not hesitate to scoop up an LV & black insert if I didn't already have a GMT & TT Blue Sub. I still struggle with not getting one before they're discontinued. If I had the cash, I probably would, lol.

Like I was saying in another thread, I just got frustrated because I really do want to talk about watches. I just felt like some mods were being unfair. But im putting it aside b/c I think the people here have some great knowledge and insight.

Hi Rob,

I didn't say a word in that previous thread, but I'd like to welcome you aboard.

This is by far the BEST forum on the internet - bar none. The mods here have a helluva job on their hands with literally thousands upon thounsands of members signed on......and with so many new members wending their way through, their task is made even more difficult!!

It's not easy keeping track of so many people, so you must bear with that and realize the magnitude of the job.

Anyway, since you asked, I would recommend the SS Sub-date 16610...............if it's a real good, simple sports watch you are looking for.

Not only is it still the most recognised Rolex out there, it also holds its resale value pretty well and is always in demand just about anywhere in this whole wide world.

Good luck and keep posting.

Cheers - JJ

If you are going for a sports watch with black dial definately the Sub. I prefer the Exp II in a white dial. I like them both.

I have two problems with the Explorer II:

1) Re-sale is bad, a Subbie, no problem. You will lose a lot more money if you are a flipper on the Explorer II.
2) The non-functional bezel, it does not turn, of little use. In fact, the GMT is an Explorer II with a useful bezel, and they hold their value like Subs.
3) If you are referring to the Explorer (not II) I LOVE that watch, simple, elegant, LOVE IT!!!!

I agree with this, if you are going black dial, go Sub. I love the Explorer II, but it will be with a white dial (a la JJ ) when I get that watch. Really, though, they are both great and you can't go wrong with either.

They always come back Mosco. Do you know how many people over the years on the watch forums I frequent said they'd never be back? Lisa, Valtentine and Ijenn have ever recently posted. They always seem to come back.

Explorer II, of course!!! Solid as a tank, with very classy looks, goes well with dressy and sporty clothes, and it doesn't scream "ROLEX HERE, YUP, RIGHT HERE!!!" as the Submariner.

Personally I would go for the Sub, but if you would use a second time zone feature a lot that's one reason to consider the Exp II.

Being the practical sort I would base my decisions on whether or not you traveled between different time zones frequently. I love being able to time things with my sub but if I traveled frequently I go with the Explorer II or the GMT II.

i own both...purchased the explorer II first. just purchased a sub this week. i would say get the sub first, but that might be because i am in love with the sub right now. love the explorer ii also...both great watches. a white face explorer II would compliment the sub black nicely in the future

If you're partial to the black dial, and think you may end up with both, consider the LV Sub as your first purchase.

You get the maxi dial w/ larger markers and hands, and a cool green bezel insert. If you aren't partial to the green, you can purchase a new black insert from one of the members here or likely at your AD (if they have a watchmaker).

Some enticement....
