Need some Quick help with SS DJ purchase

I'm currently on an NCL cruise and they have several used Rolex watches available. They have a beautiful SS DJ 16234 that I'm thinking of buying in what looks to be mint condition. They say it's circa 1995 and was completely overhauled and serviced by a company called Swiss Crown.

It comes with a service report and does state that the crystal was replaced with a non-Rolex sapphire crystal. They are offering a 2 year warranty on the watch and claim to have many service centers in the US (Swiss Crown).

Anyone have an opinion on this? Should I buy without it having a Rolex crystal? I figured I can take it to my AD when I get back to have a Rolex crystal put on - any idea what that would cost?

They are willing to negotiate the price. I was thinking of offering around $4500.

Again, any buying advice is greatly appreciated.

Joe

I wouldn’t. But that’s me. Too many variables in play - and I’m betting not enough answers.

I’m always hesitant about non RSC service and overhauling — not that I am against it — have watchmaker friends who I’d trust with ANY of my watches — but I know them and the process is transparent. On a cruise. Not so much.

I’d just wait.

Wait until your disembarking and offer them 4k. haha, If it's really nice and I'm sure you know what your looking at and they must be trustful I don't see how you can go wrong, not like it's a frankewatch. I would grind them on the money though.

If you have internet access. I would compare prices via watchrecon or watchpatrol. But I wouldn’t off more than $4k for it.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately internet service is pretty bad and is hit and miss with many sites.

I think $4000 would be the most I'd pay if I decide to pull the trigger. We'll be in St. Thomas on Wednesday. They are supposed to be a few watch shops there I'll check out. Maybe I'll find something better there.

Thanks again!

After a couple of days of thinking about it, I decided this would not be a good move for me.

I'll wait until I very back from my trip to see what I can find.

The lesson learned for me is never impulse buy a used Rolex!

Good thinking. I think $4k is way too much for the watch with all that variable.
When you get a chance browse through Capetown Diamonds if you are still interested in a used SS or TT DJ.
Great selection and top quality pieces. Jonathan, the owner is always open to reasonable price.
