6429 Commando Assit

So took a gamble and received a 2.7mil 6429 Commando

If it is fake it is the best I have seen - though I am not intimately familiar with these. Comparing to hundreds of photos of good ones and a few questionable ones I would like to get some input from some TRF folks (also asked at VRF).

Dial texture looks good, lume UV response seems good, macro of hand seems good.

In particular - while the serial range seems correct and the ref is correct - I may be a little paranoid on the engravings.

If anyone would like to comment offline that has one for comparison purposes my email is jredmond@linesiders.com

Cheers & thanks ,

John

Engravings look awfully good for a vintage watch

If Eric says it's ok, then it's good enough for me.
Never heard of commando before.
Super cool

The font print and the print itself looked very good.

That is very fine looking. What are the comparisons between it and an Explorer? Is it as large as the comparison to the Speedmaster or is that not accurate?

I'd say that the way the pitting has encroached on the engraved reference number, esp the 6 is a great indicator of it being authentic. If the engraving cut into the pitting that would be bad.

Just found this generic description in a discussion on Fratello:

Similar to the vintage Rolex Explorer 1016, but different in a number of ways. The movement for starters, isn’t a self-winding caliber but a hand wound caliber 1225 instead. With a size of just 34mm it is closer to an Airking or regular Oyster Perpetual in stainless steel. The dial has similarities with the Explorer 1016 as well, but the hands are different.

That watch is amazing! Im a 34mm collector. I would love to add it to my collection. If you decide to let it go, let me know.

UPDATE: Nevermind LOL. I just saw how much real ones go for

Thanks guys - it is a pretty cool watch with some great patina! Reminds me very much of my old Tudor Ranger that I let go - except this is much harder to find.

It is 34mm - so noticeably smaller the the Speedy (which was just being used to prop the 6429 into better light).

I suspect (and hope) you paid much less than these have been going for (inexplicably IMO) by dealers lately. A nice and interesting and rare watch, but I always thought pricing should be in more line with a nice Ranchero rather than a gilt Sub!

This one looks like it has gotten honest use over the decades, with the dial patina and crack in the crystal...

Thanks Adam - I do have it in the deal but not steal range ;) - One thing I will say on these - they are superbly cool looking pieces.
