I'm just asking because I'm joining an Archeology forum and want to start a thread to figure out what the "pinnacle of artifacts" is in order to help out those that get suckered down at the souk into overpaying for a modern, "close-enough" rendition of his one-of-a-kind death mask to imagine they have purchased "the best" souvenir measured objectively against all other souvenirs.
I thought Indiana Jones settled that question--the Ark of the Covenant. Or maybe it was the actual Holy Grail. One of those two would be the Pinnacle of artifacts, I'm pretty sure.

I think the Daytona is the best movement Rolex makes and I like chronographs so for me the Daytona is the pinnacle of the Rolex Professional models. That written, I think the Submariner is the most iconic and would be my Rolex of choice if I could own only one Rolex. Also, the Speedmaster is far more iconic than the Daytona.

I bought my Daytona in 2003 at an AD. The Rolex forums of the day were talking about how to get on "The List"- spend a ton @ the AD, paying a premium @ a Grey Dealer, etc. Love Daytonas, just don't use it (chrono function) too much. Then again, the helium valve in my sea dweller doesn't get much use, nor does my Porsche see anywhere it's limits.

Only for those willing to pay over retail or wait months or years. Ultimate is the watch that stops you wanting to collect because it can’t be bettered for looks and functionality. Daytona isn’t that watch imho

As mentiomed before
Ten years ago people would not touch them now with the hype created , some people believe they own cure to cancer when they get one
I consider the Sub series to be the most iconic
always been liked by Rolex fans and always been at the list of most serious Rolex collectors
And with lots of history
Now for pinnacle points , they all go to the SkyDweller for me

The answer is no. Is Daytona one of the most hyped up watches? yes.

No. I’d consider a GMT or Sub the peak over a Daytona all day. They don’t have the same provenance as their siblings. And don’t even get me started comparing to a moonwatch!

I was just looking at some old posts on a Rolex board. in Jan 1999 (before in house movement) the poster was saying the list was $5100, but the market value was $7000.
He also said Rolex had been under pricing them (16520) for 27 of the 30 years of production. Hyped? Absolutely. Flash in the pan? maybe not so much.
