Why can't you shake your watch to start

Lots of people on here say not to shake a watch to start it or keep it going yet I run in my watch do go karting go swimming play golf and wear it all day for day to day things and I am sure doing these things it gets shaked about so why not a gentle shake to start it as doing all these things it gets shaked

As a matter of fact, the BEST way to start up a STOPPED watch is with a gentle "brandy like swirl" in a plane parallel to the floor!!

Once the second hand swings into motion, give the crown around 40 turns and you're all ready to go.

Are you going around the watch when you wind it?

hey JJ, is it a bad practice to 'dead start' a rolex auto by winding?

Good question, Cody.....one to which you will receive different answers.

Personally, to me it DOES NOT make sense to hold a STOPPED watch in your hand, unscrew the crown and start winding it.

Something like flogging a dead horse, if you get my gist!!

To me it makes more mechanical sense to get the damn thing going first by the "brandy like swirls" I described above, and THEN give the crown the 40 odd turns.

Once the watch is in MOTION, I think it's so much SAFER to wind. Surely 30+ years can't prove me wrong.

Well JJ thats whats the crown is for, and a automatic watch is only a manual wind watch with a automatic winding mechanism fitted. Some auto watches watches like some models of Seiko you cannot wind they must be shaken. But IMHO its always best to manual wind a stopped Rolex auto watch. You will not put any extra wear on crown stem or threads whatsoever, just think of all the manual wind Rolex and many others that get wound daily for decades. But to answer the original posters question you could shake to start but its best to wind fully to get the maximum power reserve to start off.

No problem with shaking but a twisting motion is better to start, picture the watch moving around the balance wheel. Not going to hurt the watch unless you get violent with it.

If the watch is stopped, bar a miracle, you'll need to set the the time so why not just wind it while you've got the crown unscrewed?

I can see where JJ's coming from though, he's savouring the moment

If I need to start up again I use the winder and after 8 gentle (me!) turns of the winder away the second hand go's. Then give it about another 30 and thats it.

On other makes of watches I act the caveman and give it a shake., sometimes not on the wrist (I shouldn't have said it like that!!!) and away they go. I don't bother to wind them, just do what they were made to do and wear them!

Nothing has gone pear shaped as yet in 20 odd years doing it this way.

Sorry I couldn't make it 30 JJ but youre a bit older than me.
