Oled tv @ ces

$7.5k expected for a 55 inch?? Ouch! I guess the technology is still a couple years away from being affordable.

It won't take but a few years for it to become affordable.

Will OLEDs improve programming?

Sony abandons OLED TV for the consumer market
The slow growth of consumer interest in OLED panels due to high costs has constantly positioned the technology on the brink of failure over the years, especially with television manufacturers focusing on 3D over the last two years. It appears there will be a content and hardware issue with the new LG 55″ OLED television shown at CES this year. According to Forbes, the OLED panel uses four colors instead of three and only AVCHD camcorders and the PlayStation 3 would be able to replicate accurate color.

Really, how thin do we need a TV to be? If it sticks out 4 inches from the wall or 1/2 inch from the wall, who cares?

It's not about that (though I like a nice design as much as the next person), but hopefuly it will solve current issues with light bleeding, black levels, etc. which are inherent to current backlight technologies such as CCFL and LED ... Anyway, it obviously needs to come down to normal prices.

That said, I have a 5 year old Sony LCD and I am perfecly happy with it. As Grady says above, content and source are really the key factors.

I've never seen an OLED TV and I guess I'm a cynic but I can't imagine how it can look that much better than my Sharp LED HD television.

Or can it?

I'd say marginal at best? Kinda like a (larger) retina display like the one in the iphone or some OLED screens on samsung phones I guess ... Like I mentioned above, maybe it will solve some of the clouding, bleeding you see on current LCDs when there is a full black screen and black will be a true black ... who knows.

It is just interesting to follow the tech. Certainly not viable at that price ... especially for something that will be obsolete the very same moment it is on sale.

First Gen OLEDs will not be better in refresh rate, scan speeds or other factors like that. But it will improve as consumers begin to demand the products in volume.

For now it should use less energy, offer easier installs and open the door for smaller screens in tablets, laptops, etc (11' - 14"). As a TV technology I expect they will get integrated into other applications like security monitors on entry doors and other uses.

Interesting, that 55 LG OLED won the Best in Show award at CES (from CNET that is).

How long do you think it will take before these TVs are reasonable enough to buy?

My 10 year old 720i Vizio in my bedroom will meet with a fortuitous "accident" at the exact time I deem the OLED affordable. Don't tell my my wife...
