I see your point, but my point is a similar diesel engine equipped mid-size SUV (like the Toureg TDI) will have significantly more range than a gas powered one.

A good diesel rocks! I did drive a bmw 335d (I own a 335i) and, man, the torque on that thing is savage!
I owned a 320d a few years ago while living in Belgium and it was an immensely enjoyable car.

I drive a 335d as well. I've had mine on a dyno and they're underrated from from the factory. I've been testing a few tunes as well and you think it's savage as is ... try adding 150 more lb-ft. This car proves that you can have a quick car and good fuel economy too.

Around town (99% of my driving) I average ~28 MPG. On the one road trip we took it on (it only has 6,000 miles on the clock) we saw over 42 MPG. I'd imagine we'll see more when it breaks in a little more as we saw with the wife's wagon.
