advice needed: panerai 005 vs 177

Condition pretty much the same, both clean watches, 005 J vs a 177 M. The pam177 cost $1100 more. Which would you buy? I like both but can't decide; it will be my first panerai. Thanks in advance.

I've owned about 5 Panerai's over the years and although I've never had a 005 or a 177, however I have owned a 25 and it wore better than any other the SS models I had. They're hefty watches and the titanium makes it more wearable.

They're both good choices, but quite different in the details (metals, logo, dial type). Make sure you've had a chance to appreciate the differences before you decide. If you still like both, then just go with the cheaper 005.

I don't know what the 177 is, but the 005 was my first and seems to still be a popular reference.

x2

(Personally, I prefer the 005's sausage (painted) dial and "pop" of the SS. Also, the brown dial of the new 564 (replacement of the 177) looks better than the 177's dial, IMO.)

Good luck with the choice!

Had the 005 as my first Panerai and it was a lovely piece. I love the logo on the dial. I vote for the 005!

177. Open back so you can see the movement. Titanium is nice as well.

177 for me. Like a Ti 111. Love the display back.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 005 and the heft of the steel case, but I prefer the dial and back of the 177 in this choice.

I used to own a 111, I'd go for the 177.

The brushed look is nicer that the polished look of the 005.

Forgot to say but the polished steel on the 005 shows off the scratches a lot, nice piece though...

I've owned 2 005's and a 111. I much prefer the painted dial to the sandwich. Also, I love the logo. So, between the 2, I'd say 005.

Having said that, as I'm in the market for another PAM, I can no longer justify spending $5k for a watch with the same movement as my $350 Steinhart, so I'm looking towards something in-house.

I was hopign they would have done a 005 replacement with the 8-day, like the 510 but with a painted dial and logo.

005

Although I prefer the 111 with its sandwich dial and absence of logo

You'll be bored with the 177 in very short order.......on the other hand, with a 005, you'll have an iconic Panerai........No-Brainer The choice couldn't get much easier.........
