africa and zimbabwe isn't necessarily the same thing. People tend to generalize ginormous geographic areas in these threads and then apply the same advice to everywhere
My wife has been to Nigeria (no idea where, but wherever the oil is) and company policy is armored car and armed guards. So no i wouldn't wear a Rolex or take myself there if i didn't have to be there. That doesnt mean everywhere is like that

Again Kenya and Zimbabwe (other comment) don't represent the whole of Africa. Even in those countries, I'm sure there's probably ok areas like every other country. I don't know since I've never been so won't judge so much.

And the OP didn't ask whether it was safe or not, they obviously think they are if they only wanted a suggestion between the two nice watches. Alot of folks just jumped the gun here.

Anyways, I voted Speedy.

It's really hard to generalize; Africa is HUGE. But I've been a few times. I usually wear a G-Shock. In Uganda, for example, there's a dish called Rolex. It's short for rolled eggs. The locals joke it's the only Rolex they can afford. Why start off potentially putting distance between you and the locals? A G-shock is tough, accurate, more humble, and if you lose it, who cares.

I feel comfortable saying the OP would be wise regardless to travel without expensive jewelry. The last thing I want to be is the American with a 5k watch on wandering around any country in Africa.

If he knew his surroundings well enough I assume he wouldn’t be asking.

Then again, what the hell do I know. I’ve never been.

The murder rate is considerably lower than the US as a whole

Mauritius, Seychelles in particular are also in africa and popular destinations.

The point I'm making is that it's not logical to blanket an entire continent in a negative light, by establishing the stark differences between the two.

But if you're actually interested, Port Louis Mauritius, Marrakesh, and Rwanda are all very safe and beautiful

Depends were the OP is going.

Wore my SD in South Africa, was fine although i felt safer in Afghanistan to be honest. Beautiful country though.

(Went to stay at a friends beach house and the old German couple next door, were hacked up by 4 intruders the night before. They had left a security grill/door open!)

However wore my SD in Zimbabwe and felt totally safe, even driving round at night.

Exactly!! I just sent my account information and SSN to the son of the deposed King. He said I could keep 30% of the $500mm he will deposit on my account, as a sign of good faith.

Safe travels! It should be a great experience for you. Albeit completely dependent on where you're going and with whom, I would still play it safe and wear neither of those, personally.

Something like a Casio, smart watch, Citizen Eco-Drive, or even a Seiko would be my pick(s). Something you're less likely to mind losing if it did come down to it (God forbid). Either way, have a fun and safe adventure! Be sure to post updates with pictures when you can

Have a safe safe trip

My international travel companion is a Casio G Shock.
It’s likely to be replaced by the new Seiko Solar Arnie.

Africa is a whole giant continent. Like other continents, some parts are safe, and some not. Best is to apply common sense, as you would do anywhere else.

I’ve travelled extensively across Africa, wearing all manner of watches, and every single choice of watch appropriate to my surroundings. The key is to use common sense.

I wouldn't ride a rolex through Africa. It is simply not necessary to take a risk. A casio does the same and is worth a hundred. sorry for my translator english

I've only been to South Africa (Joburg and Cape Town) and loved it. Looking forward to booking an upcoming vacation to West Africa (not sure exactly where yet).

I'd go with the Blancpain given the date function.
