Help me to choose between 116234 vs 126234

Hi guys

I currently own two watches including Rolex GMT II Master 116710BLNR and Omega Seamster 300 Master Co-axial (Non date, not the diver300m).

I realize that both GMT and SM are both excellent but I am looking for something dressy and daily beater. I usually wear white lab coat (working in medical field) and need a date function to sign papers at work.

I am thinking about getting Datejust. I tried DJ41 on my wrist at my AD, but it look too big for my small wrist 6.25 inches. Next, I tried old DJ36 116234 and it was perfect fit for my wrist. Also, its jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel added classic and dressy look which I love.

Anyways, new DJ36 is MSRP $8,200 (expect $500 discount from my AD) USD and old 116234 pre-owned is about $5,700 USD,

Is new movement and slimmer lug worthy for $2,000 difference?

Which one should I go for it?

I don’t think it’s worth paying extra for a newer one, although they are nice. The big difference is the lug sizes and the chapter ring around the dial. If you like one better than the other weed on these differences that helps you choose. The movement change is cool, But the old movement is very good in its own right.

pretty much comes down to whether or not you want the hidden clasp. i wouldn't pay that difference for the movement update personally

Depends on condition, box papers, time on warranty but most importantly dial. If the pre owned isn't the dial you want then you will never be happy.

I'd get the 116234 just for the hidden clasp. My favorite part of owning a 36mm DJ.

Absolutely agree! Mine says hi!

I actually like the smaller batons of the 116234 over the larger batons on the 126234. The dial looks more balanced to me a bit more classy to me.

And don't forget dial color changes. The white index dial is no longer available, although blue and black are.

I wanted the white index dial and the hidden clasp so my decision was simple. I did get a call from an OC AD that had tried recently to get me the 116234 w fluted on jubilee with white index dial and couldn't as the 126234 were starting to fill the pipeline. The call was about a customer that wanted to trade their 116234 for a 126234. If the white dial is your want, pm me and I will pass on the name of the AD and the sales person. The trade in has a 2018 dated warranty card.

Thanks for your help guys. Yeah it's difficult to find the dial and condition that I want. Prices go up around 6k USD if the watches are in excellent condition within 10 years circa with box and paper.

If my AD offer new 116234 for 7k, should I take it? or wait 126234 and accept 7.5 to 7.6k for new one? What do you guys think?

Do you like the chapter ring? If you hate it like I do, then then the 126234 is the only choice.

I don’t mind a little details at dial but color of dial is matter. I prefer blue or silver with fluted bezel and jubilee. I prefer 126234 bracelet with easy link system rather than hidden clasp from 116234. Majorly, my concern was prices differences between those two.

New model. In addition to the new movement and thinner lugs, there’s also the non-roulette date wheel. Worth a premium to me...

Has it been confirmed that the new blue Diablo does not have a roulette wheel?

Are there any differences between an older 116234 and say a 2017 116234? Just dial colors? Any other differences in the 10+ years they made those watches?

I'd go with the spankin' new 126234. Overall proportions and dial are perfection.

Hmm, they made the lugs a little thinner, didn't they. And no chapter ring. I can't unsee these things now that you mentioned it.

Yes, the 36mm became even leaner.

Has anyone got a side by side picture of the same model?

Like a 116234 and a 126234, or a 116200 and a 126200?

Cheers

My AD has blue 116234 with fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet. I expect to get the similar combination for 126234 at my AD soon. I will take a picture and upload it soon.

When you say the lugs are thinner, do you mean side to side or bottom to top?

Side to side.

I personally love the roman chapter ring and was sad to see it go.

Thinner lugs means better proportion on smaller wrist, also bigger baton hour index combined with simple stick only minute marks makes the watch more versatile, now the new DJ can also fit good on casual dress!

for the Super Jubilee I'd go for the older one. The hidden clasp is very beautiful and with an optional 1 ¼ link you can achieve a perfect fit.

The new movement is irrelevant, watches are bought on looks

I will buy the new one with the 3235 calibre. Is more beautiful (lugs), and the most important: Inside the watch are the last movement with all the improvements after more than 100 years of Rolex research.

I've gone for the 126234 for the new movement, slimmer lugs and adjustable jubilee bracelet. I previously owned a 116200 on jubilee. Cant go wrong with either.
