Thoughts on the 3940

Hey,

I might be considering purchasing this iconic Perpetual Calendar and wanted to get the take of TRF on what they thought about the watch. I know that some may not like the 36 mm size but for my opinion that range seems to be the most balanced size when it comes to the Calendar complications. I own a 37 mm AC and I think the size proportions look better than a 39 mm variant. I guess it's how I perceived the AP RO 15300 vs. the 15400 updated example.

Overall, if anyone has owned or experienced a 3940, much appreciated on your opinion!

Thanks,

Tan

I just bought a 3940p. It’s a special watch and overall reference. The dial is perfectly laid out, and the font is so legible and uncluttered. No squashed numbers as seen on the 3940 successors, which eventually bothered me enough that my old 5140p was sold.

The 3940 is small by today’s standards at 36mm, but the watch is such a joy to look at, is extremely comfortable, and is easy to wear as a daily to the office because of its size.

Which metal of the 3940 are you considering?

Funny, I just started a 3940 Appreciation thread this week. I hope to see lots of wrist pics from our TRF members of this iconic watch. Great things often come in small packages.

I feel the same. One of the very best perpetual calendars made by Patek. I now regret not buying the new special dial 3940 offered to me earlier this year.

Sam,

What is the new special dial 3940?

3940J Black dial, Patek remade the 3940J recently with a black dial in very limited numbers.

Interesting. That sounds like it would be beautiful.

Did it combine the 5140 dial with the 3940 like the London Collection LEs? Or was the dial a pure 3940?

Does anyone here have a guide on 3940 dial/caseback combinations? The ones I see for sale online has both solid and exhibition backs, plus the dials are different.

It didn't have the pure 3940 dial. It had smaller date numerals on 5 and 27 like the 3940 London collection.

I’m sure it still would be beautiful and collectible, but I personally wouldn’t have bought it either. For me, because of the smaller 5 and 27. Having owned the 5140p, the smaller numerals eventually became a (negative) focal point as I didn’t like them. And that’s why it’s gone.

3940 is a lovely smaller Patek. Very nice classic style.

The best Patek still obtainable by the average Patek lover without megabucks.

It’s my go-to dress watch (3940g). As others have said, smaller than most watches in my collection, but perfectly legible and well laid out. If I could only have two watches (one sport, one dress), this would be part of the duo.

In spite of its size, the 3940 is the iconic Calatrava PC!

I'm a big fan of the 3940. Unless you have large wrists, I think 36mm is a great, classic size.
