New Datejust 36mm Silver vs Blue

Hello Everyone,

I would appreciate your advice and thoughts as I'm heading tomorrow morning to the AD to get my first Datejust. I do like the new model (126234) with the new lugs and the classic look.

This is going to be my daily watch to add to my small collection that includes a Submariner 16610, and a Speedy professional, I need something small, and more dressy for office work and to stay on wrist the rest of the day in comfort.

Im heading for fluted bezel with jubilee bracelet, and in between the 2 dials, blue and silver. I tried and liked both, the silver is more classic and dressy, the blue is just perfect.

Please share your thoughts and experience...

I would go with the silver dial. Like you mentioned, it’s a classic. Blue is nice, however, I personally would get tired of it. Also, you have two dark dial pieces already.

My 36mm white dial DateJust, I love. It gets more wrist time than my SS Sub/Date.

I would be wary of any blue dial. Yes, they are the flavor of the month, but I fear 20 years from now, folks will laugh at them and say, “That is so 2020.l

Silver goes with everything and the shiny dial gets lots more attention from others:

That's a beauty. Anyone who thinks that will ever be laughed at or looked down upon is off their rocker.

OP, you said blue is perfect, so go with blue. If you go with silver because a bunch of other people told you it works better with outfits, is more conservative or whatever, you'll be kicking yourself for not getting what you really wanted.

***Edit. Just saw your updated post OP. Congrats. Enjoy that beauty.

OP, go with what your heart likes, not with way may be cool or not in 20 years. Too often people buy to impress others. Buy to impress yourself. I say this having bought and sold so many different watches to find what my heart likes. After, at one point, owning 8 rolex, I am down to 2, a 16710 and a blue DJ.

Owning the blue, has its advantages. In the sun, it is amazingly beautiful. At night or low light, it looks almost black. In other lighting and angles, it can take on a dark grey almost rhodium look. I went back and forth between silver and blue for a while.

End of the day, who cares if you have many other dark dial watches in your collection. If you like blue, go blue. Some will say you will tire of blue. Others will say you will tire of the simplicity of silver. Go with your gut.

Many thanks! I have to agree the Blue is great but apparently the silver won that smile

Let others judge for themselves. Here ae 1967, 1974, and 1967 Rolex Datejusts with blue dials:

That's just plain silly. First of all, who cares about 20 years from now, the OP is asking about the *here and now*, not a two-decade prognostication.
As far as "Rolex Blue", yes there are many shades and variations but it's generally agreed that "Nobody does *blue* like Rolex.
Subjective threads like these never really yield accurate results: lot's of opinions (which are great!) but it's always up to the buyer to decide which dial he truly wants. Personally, there is no variation of Rolex 'blue' which I dislike: especially the 5 digit Submariner which morphs into a mauve/purple after many years.
To the OP: you'll decide if it's right to after you've seen it in person a few times.
Good luck friend

Blue is the way to go. That sunburst in the light is killer.

I second this. My DJ is blue and trust me, I will never get tired of looking at it. My Rhodium YM is second only to the blue DJ.

Silver gets my vote. Blue is cool but silver has the classic DJ look.

The rhodium dial from the 116200 line (including 16200 and I suppose we can also include the day-dates of the last two generations as well) had as an option my favorite dial of all Rolex dress lines.

Now when they say rhodium on any other of the new references, it breaks my heart a little. The rhodium of the last two generations was such a perfect fit for the watch if you wanted an all steel look. The silver dial is also nice, but it always seems a bit lighter to me than what the rhodium appeared as, and so IMO wasn't as perfect of a match. I am sitting on the sidelines here really hoping that they will release another rhodium dial of that kind, not the "dark rhodium" or the "slate" colors that they now have.

You already have 2 black dials. Easy choice here.... Silver.

Hi Rami, nice collection. If it was mine I would add that mesmerizing touch of blue to the collection as it's already monochromatic.

The blue dial is great looking but I would go with silver or white for a dial selection. They are neutral colors that match with most others and outfits.

I say silver too. It has a classy appeal that is hard to match with any other color.

Both classic! I think the blue adds a sporty touch while the silver is dressier. Can't go wrong!
