Yellow Gold on Strap with Date Aperture
I have spent some time contemplating my first Patek and the references that speaks to me.
I know I want a yellow gold Patek with a display back and a date aperture on strap, 36-40mm. References 5117-J and 5053-J sing to me. Would the Patek experts here recommend any other references worth considering? I don't want to go into complications since I prefer a simple dial and I already have a JLC Reverso Triple Calendar Moonphase in Rose Gold. However perhaps I can be swayed towards 5015-J and/or 5054-J though I am a bit concerned the dial is too busy. I do like this movement. |

What about a 5711J? Ticks all the boxes.

Also...5127J. Made over a limited time frame, display back, calendar and 37mm. Similar to the 5117J without a hobnail bezel. OCROLEXGUY, a trusted seller, has one for sale now.

thx for the suggestions. regarding 5711, don't think it's my thing. 5711 in my mind has to be steel, and the bracelet is such a big part of what the watch is. I am not that into steel bracelets.
5127J is very nice but I find the dials of 5053 and 5117 more attractive. The officer's caseback of the 5053 in particular is a selling point. |

Pity they didn't make the 5296 in yellow gold IIRC... How about the 5227J though?
I find the combination of crown guards and hobnail bezel on the 5117 a little weird and much prefer the 5107 and 5127 as well as 5153 out of those that tick your boxes. |

5107 or 5127 would be a nice classic choice.
5153 also a good option with the 38mm size and hinged back. Could probably get a deal on that one as I doubt demand is that high. |

Will echo the suggestion of the 5227j. The concave bezel makes it wear a little small which is a negative for me but a positive for some. Certainly if 36-40 is your range this will be in the sweet spot. The intricate case, trapezoidal indices, pilot feature of the case back, and lacquer dial are relatively unique and I think the lacquer dial of the j actually looks brighter and better than the r (which appears more beige) or g (which looks a bit green).

5227j beautiful but a touch expensive and maybe a bit too big
5107j lovely but the bezel is a touch large and controversial. Looks best in P format. 5119j great beautifully designed watch but very formal. 5127j meets all criteria - some don’t like the crown guards. I went with the final option myself |

A Calatrava in YG will always be a classic, even though YG dress watches are not as popular as they used to.
The 5153 is a nice watch. It has the officer's caseback and also a deployant clasp. Not many Calatravas come with a deployant clasp and these are a few thousand dollar extra. So the list price for the 5153 has traditionally been higher than most other Calatravas. I own a 5153G LE and it is a good size on the wrist, compared to some of the smaller Calatravas. If you can try on these watches, it may make the decision easier for you. |

I ever get a second (halfway) modern Calatrava it may well be the stealthy 5107P. |

5227 although I'd recommend it in R, which I think suits this reference particularly well (and is the version I own). The larger 39mm size of the 5227 also wears well both now and into the future.
Previously I owned a 5015R which is nice, but at 35mm small by today's standards and frankly I didn't find it very comfortable on the wrist either, which is why I got the 5227R (the hinge case back being a standout feature on the 5015 and especially on the 5227). |
