Rolex Yellow Gold or Patek Steel?

Given the current prices on the preowned market. Would you rather buy a Rolex Day-Date yellow gold 40mm (228238) or a Patek Philippe Aquanaut in steel (5167)? Both are right around that 30k mark. Where would you rather spend that amount of money on?

Day-date, A Patek at that price should be a Nautilus. It’s a sports watch for young people.

Day-Date is better for the money wise, PP is too much premium for grey dealer.

Rolex Yellow Gold or Patek Steel?

DayDate over the Aquanaut, same applies even if it was up against a Nautilus.

Ask me the same question with a Royal Oak in the mix and it would be the AP hands down.

The Day Date gives you the extra complication and of course the PM. That’s where I’d put my money between these two.

Me I would choose the Rolex. Because I love yellow gold watches. I have never owned a Patek though, if I did then I might be telling you a different story.

What else is in the collection?

Personally to add a third option, I would go RG OF Daytona.

But if only those two, depended on where I lived. If Asia or Europe, the Patek. If US then DD.

I would rather own a DD40. Arguably, you are getting a lot more bang for the buck. If you are asking which one is less common or more collectible- thats a different story. Funny how a “hyped” entry level Patek is in put in same category as a Rolex flag ship...

Wouldn't buy either - Aquanaut is too expensive for what it is, and DD is not to my taste at all.

Don’t like the Aquanaut design so an easy choice for me.

LOL

As I said in another thread go try on the Aquanaut. It feels NOTHING like a gold Rolex. Very underwhelming.

I'd sell a Rolex or two and get a 5164. It's quality and detailing is fine.

If you want a DD, ask in the Rolex sub-section.

If you want a PP, ask in the Patek sub-section.

I’d personally go PM Rolex first then. After all the waitlist on AP or PP is long anyways, so can enjoy DD now while saving up for the brand shift.

You can get a Patek 5146 with gold bracelet for around $35k as well.

DD for sure. I am not a fan of the 5167 and certainly wouldn't pay over retail for it. I did have a 5167 for a few months and sold it.

Day Date. Not a big fan of the Aquanaut, although I would consider one at MSRP. I like the Nautilus more, but too expensive grey.

What color face on the DD? I like silver best.

Im thinking white or silver romans. Black with diamond baguettes is pretty sharp too though.

The Aquanaut (and Nautilus for that matter) are the Patek equivalent of the 70’s Daytonas. They were hanging around dealers’ cases for decades then all of a sudden became “hot.” I remember looking at an Aquanaut with both bracelet and tropical strap for $8100 around 2001 or so, I bought a SS/Plat Yachtmaster instead for a grand less.
