Between these two the DD. Have you considered an AP Offshore?

I have, but looking at prices, the rubberclad is in the low 10s and the ceramic pusher 42s are in the high 10s low 20s. Also worried about how bulky it will look and how often I would wear it. I think the normal Royal Oak line would be more fitting for me.

Im looking for a special watch to commemorate my first born son this year. I welcomed him into the world with my TT bluesy, but I want to get something very special. My budget is around the 30k mark. I cant get Patek at retail as I generally buy on the preowned market. So I was trying to figure out do I buy my last Rolex before stepping into Patek and AP. Or take the jump already, despite the premiums.

Depends, are you 25 or 65?

I'm joking (kinda).

Honestly it really does depend. Those are two completely different watches, completely different looks and probably for two completely different people (or at least two opposite sides of one person's personality). Both are incredibly cliche, but in different ways.

I'd go DD40 over 5167 but that's probably the only SS Patek I would say that about.

At the end of the day, it's for you...so buy what YOU love.

First off- congratulations on the child. Nothing in the world quite like that.

In this case, I'd 100% go DD. Get your name on the card (or his!). I think the DD is something you'll much more likely to keep forever and pass on to him. Both because it's an undeniably special piece, and once you've got the PP bug, you'll be flipping that 5167a to upgrade so fast it won't even be funny.

If your AD sells both PP and Rolex, get on the list and make a relationship instead of paying a premium.

Aquanaut is hyped. It was the Patek geared to the younger buyer before the hype vs top tier Rolex. It's probably a tie and down to personal taste unless you are influenced either way by the hype. Personally I want the President. Stuff the hype.

Im actually 30. Thank you it's an incredible honor and privilege. He is just fantastic. I like your idea! He is actually a jr. so maybe even engraving the initials on the back. I would agree with you. Im certainly going for Patek at some point. But maybe get the DD and purchase the Patek and more prominent birthday year.

As long as you feel you can comfortably fit a YG DD into your lifestyle this is what I'd do.

I'm 34, and in pretty much any other scenario I'd recommend a 30 year old to go 5167a. But again, if the goal is an heirloom the DD fits the bill much better.

Stainless Patek is a joke, even MSRP is far far overpriced. The rich sheep like it a lot though.

Get the DD or maybe a nice annual calendar from Patek. Much more value.

Do you want a watch that everyone else has or do you want a watch you will never see on someone else's wrist unless you are at a watch meet?

The DD is popular for a reason. However it is very common. At a typical business meeting, you can easily spot several people wearing one. Unless you are around other WIS, you will rarely find someone wearing a Patek.

If I were 30 yo, I would get the Aquanaut. If I were 60 yo, I would get the DD. I am somewhere between those two age groups and I own an Aquanaut.

Get the DD man. I was also 30 when I got my first DD40.

Its the BEST purchase I made in terms of a watch ever. Why the hell do you need to be 60 to wear a DD is beyond me. Its the boss watch and if your bank account allows for it thats all that matters.

Your going to get HUGELY let down by this Patek trust me. DO NOT buy it unless you really really really love it.

So many factors to consider. But I would say the Patek steel models are very overpriced for what they are in my opinion. Not saying they aren’t incredible watches.

At grey market prices DD for me. If buying a Patek at retail a Nuatilus would be my pick and keep the £5k difference.

Lots of options with 30k... I find the DD to be suited more to as a retirement watch or a choice for someone older, but on the other hand cannot fathom spending that much on the Aquanaut in SS.

Like someone has said consider going SS AP RO, as you can get one under that price from grey.

Also don't understand all the Aquanaut hate. Was considering a WG Yachtmaster on OysterFlex, then scrubbed all desire for that once I put this WG model on my wrist...

Awesome feedback everyone! Seems that everyone loves the Day-Date haha. Out of curiosity what is your favorite size Day Date? 36? 40? 41? Personally, I think the 40mm fits my wrist the best. I have a 7" wrist and the 36mm seems a little small unless I am wearing a dress shirt.

Go with the DD40, Normally I would say Patek 10 times out of 10 but in this case the DD wins by a mile if we are talking about what you get for the money.

The right DD is a marvel. Lots of options. For clean simplicity though I love the Aquanaut. Unfortunately the prices of PP are prohibitive, even by Rolex standards.
