Newbie needs some assistance
Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and had a couple of questions regarding a used Rolex Datejust I ran across recently. Can anyone give me any information on this? Model number, authentic, band authentic, etc? It had papers, but it looks to be in French? Also, the band stamp doesn’t have the famous Rolex stamp. It says Rolex but it doesn’t have the swirl lines around it. I was told it was from 1974 and we have proof of its age based on a payment that was made in the earlier ‘80’s. Sorry I don’t have more pictures of the clasp. My wife only took a few.
Thank you in advance for assistance. |

Datejust, 1603, sigma dial.
At first blush it looks fine. All the numbers you want are against the case under the bracelet end links.

Larger photos would help, but it looks to be a sigma dial ref 1603. Bracelet is either later or aftermarket, but the original clasp may have been transferred over. Really can't tell much from the tiny photos.

Can anyone give me an approximate value on this? I would like to make an offer but don’t want to over pay or insult the seller. Oh, and it comes with the original box and papers with matching serial numbers to the watch.

An appropriate offer would also depend a lot on context. Who is the seller? What is the asking price? If it's a pawn shop, you might be able to get a bargain.
The photos are still really not good enough for me to judge condition or originality. However, my gut feeling (based on the background in the photos, the label, the overpolished clasp, etc.) is that it's probably a decent example that's been prepped for sale by a professional. Papers are nice, but they don't prove that everything is still original, if you care about that. So I'd have to advise you to make a pretty low offer to protect yourself. Why not do some research on eBay using the advanced search feature to look at SOLD vintage DJs, focusing especially on 4-digit SS references. Also look for listings and recent sales on the sales forum here. It's a common enough reference that you will find a lot of comps for yourself, and since you have seen the watch in person, you can compare the condition.

Asking price would help.
I am cheap and old DJ's are plentiful so would not want to get 'crazy' with it. |

All good advice above, but what about the papers? Do you have photos of those? And a photo showing the inside of the bracelet clasp that you mentioned?

They are asking $3295 but said they would take $2800. Based on what I am seeing on eBay, that’s a decent price. I would say it is in good condition. A few scratches on the watch including the face.

More pictures added of paperwork and the mystery bracelet. Please let me know if this is a good deal at $2800.
Thanks for all the information thus far. Last edited by Bossduce; 11 October 2019 at 12:07 PM.. Reason: Misspelling |

Moderator, please let me know if I am posting in the wrong section. I am not getting as much feedback as I was suspecting. Please move my discussion to the proper section/location if that is the case. Thank you!

TRF is not a valuation Site. Approximate values can be found throughout the Internet for your locale and market.
As mentioned, your watch appears to be a put-together set for sales. The "paper" cannot be authenticated to that watch or any Dealer. The price/value should reflect that of other like-condition examples, and be what you would willing pay and the seller accept.

Thank you for that clarification, that’s why I’m a “newbie”. I was also asking about the authenticity of the bracelet and buckle. I’ve seen something similar for sale on this site but they don’t state the authenticity of it. I am most common with the Rolex surrounded by the famous swirly lines.

USA bracelets were provided by Dealers during some eras of import where a whole watch was taxed higher than watch parts, so they were joined up later.
Usually, the USA parts were date stamped and do not have the Swiss swirls. The clasp is also an oval-link piece but the bracelet halves are D-link, a different era. This one looks quite pristine for something 50+ years old but you need advice from a US bracelet expert.

The bracelet is a put together, or maybe partially fake. The USA blades go with oval links. The clasp goes with a folded Swiss link. You have D links.
Edit: and it looks like someone blacked out the serial on the paper with a magic marker, rendering paper useless ;). Just kidding.

At $2800 I can definitely see it finding a buyer on a place like Reddit, with the doorstop dial on that 1603, but I'd be unsure of the time frame, and whether you'd need to throw it on a strap too. Who's to say if you'd be able to flip it for more, depending on your intention, how long you'd want to hold on to it, and above issues with the bracelet. I wouldn't be too afraid of insulting any seller by making an offer at a level you're comfortable at.

I have a 1975 DJ 1603 w/sigma dial (bought in Aug 2019). It had a complete service by a CW 21 certified watchmaker, who is an authorized Rolex watchmaker, before being placed for sale. Unfortunately, the bracelet is an aftermarket (still very nice), so the price was reduced. I paid $1700 and felt that was a good price based on some reasonable research. So, I would say a price around 2200-2500 would be reasonable (once you verify the Ref and SN). Do you know if it's been recently serviced, if so when? If it is in need of service, figure an additional $450 - $550 to be added to the total purchase price. Good luck.
