Thanks! And I agree, Rolex's 20th-century business savvy was off the charts. Wilsdorf foresaw the need for watches to be worn on the wrist, wind automatically, and be waterproof. He foresaw the importance of brand ambassadors as early as the 1920's (Mercedes Gleitze. etc.), and by that point he already had a worldwide network of retailers spanning across Venezuela, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, France, Cuba, Singapore, India, etc. He aggressively gave out Rolexes to people he thought were going to make the news doing explorey stuff (like Norgay and Hillary). He foresaw the need for a lower-priced brand tier. Way ahead of his time marketing-wise.

Rolex didn't overtake Omega in chronometer output until the 1970's but nowadays people look at Rolex as if they were always on top, like a foregone conclusion. But a hell of a lot of business smarts went into making it that way!

Fascinating history. I’m learning more about the company long after being a buyer.

This "R.L. Christie, Edinburgh" watch falls into the same category as other early Rolex-made watches with a brand solely branded by the retailer:

just for accuracy, are you sure that this watch is from 1942? I have identical (model 1069 with 26,xxx serial) and I seem to remember it dating to early 30s.

I'm not; I forget how I came up with that estimate. Now that you mention it the bezel and onion crown do seem more 1930's

Where does this fit under all the Rolexes?

This is a phenomenol post and thread. Thank you.
I am lost with this watch I have found: 1930, 9carat gold case. Unusual logo on back of case and crown. Photos attached. Any thoughts on what this is or historial background.

Help!!! This vintage Rolex is a mystery for me!!!

Hi everyone!!’ Recently My grandma gave me this beautiful Rolex watch, I saw a number in the Back 1,962,637 and found out it’s from around 1969 but I’m not certainly… other than that it’s on the dial Precision…and regular Numbers on dial.
The bracelet it’s so beautiful like a never seen on one Rolex before… she just used the watch on 2 occasions and always on a safe, there’s marks of moisture on the dial, poor storage and non maintenance at all but it works just fine. I have no more info about it, so I hope anyone here have an idea of this watch!!! Thanks a lot!!!
But this forum won’t let me upload images .., (how can I upload them
Here?)

I wasn't sure if "Wintex" had ever actually been used as branding on a dial. But it looks like it was:

How about Oyster Raleigh?

I have this one got from eBay Canada. Caseback has the stamping 59559, not sure if it is Cal59.
Should it count in the list as well?
