The Explorer by a mile. The railmaster is nice, but that new denim edition marketing campaign is patronizing and really put me off.

Railmaster in 36mm is an awesome choice, but my vote would go to the explorer 1 (in 36mm size as well). If you are considering the 39mm size them would say the Railmaster as dont like 214270 proportions

I think it’s a tough choice. The Omega is a lovely little watch with a great movement. If there’s one over the other that calls to you—go with that one. However, with all the hoopla over getting a stainless Rolex sports watch these days, I’d almost go for the Omega.

I’d buy the Explorer, the Omega doesn’t do anything for me.

And on a tangental note, why can't the new Air King use the same numbers as on the Explorer? Why all silver instead of luminous and silver-outlined?

Well, the choice has been made and I have purchased - but have yet to receive - a previously loved, 2005-vintage Rolex Explorer 114270. I'll post a picture as soon as it comes in. I still can't believe I spent that much on a watch but if it gives me as much pleasure as the rest of my decidedly small and motley collection, then I shall consider it money well spent.

A good friend of mine reminded me that I'll soon be celebrating the 20th-anniversary of my first, and hopefully last, heart attack. I've had many adventures both big and small since that fateful day and I'm sure that I can do another 20 with a Rolex!

I went to the Omega boutique yesterday specifically to look at the Railmasters. The 60th anniversary Railmaster does not have a screw down crown, which turned me off. The dial and case are nice, the size appropriate.

The standard black dial Railmaster had a stunning dial and does have a screw down crown. The dial is large at 40mm, and it is all dial. You have to see the dial in person to see the way it changes in the light, much more interesting than the Explorer dial. The case is completely brushed which makes it more low key.

I own an Explorer 39 MK1 and at this point I still prefer it. I think the Omega 300 MC is a better comparison, I own it as well. If I had to choose between the 300 MC and an Explorer it would be a much harder choice.
