Poll: Which one to buy
Hi all,
My cousin is turning 35 and our entire family wants to buy him a Rolex as he is talking about buying one. Considering this will be his one and only (at least for now), we thought about something special. Please help with your vote as we are between SD43: As anniversary model, brushed (it forgives scratches more for a daily watch) and it is a solid basic and cool watch for a 35 year old Daytona C SS white: He watches the F1 and is a race car fan Daytona C SS black: He watches the F1 and is a race car fan SkyD black SS: He travels a lot and has meetings in the US, Europe and Asia. It's also a very special time piece as it is the most complicated Rolex. It has an outstanding dial, looks modern, has a bling with the fluted bezel but the Oyster keeps the balance nicely (my favorite). Sub C black: Iconic classic Unfortunately is the GMT Pepsi not possible as my AD told me 1.5 years waiting time I know you don't know him but the vote is more for the look and "what you get" :) Thank you so much and all thoughts and inputs are highly appreciated. |

If he travels I'd go with with the Sky-Dweller

I am 36 years old and my opinion would be, If you can get your hands on either Daytona, do it. I have the White face and love it!

The Sky-Dweller is great for travelers, and it's great for people who don't rotate through a collection of several watches. It would be my pick.
Note: if your AD didn't warn you about wait times for the Daytona or the Submariner, then you may want to ask that question right away. Of the watches on your list, the ones you're most likely to find reasonably available are the Submariner, the Sky-Dweller, and the Sea-Dweller (probably in that order). Nice gift, BTW :-) |

Yeah I'm surprised it's only the Pepsi that's off the table with a 1.5 year waitlist (seems short). The Daytona is certainly at least that if not more.
Anyway, if Daytona wait is too long and he's a big traveler then I'd say Sky-D. If Daytona wait is reasonable, then get the white. If waits for all are too long, then the SubC if his wrist is under 7in or SD43 if above.

One word of warning about travelling-depending in where you go to a nice watch can be a huge target and invite serious issues. Even in cosmopolitan areas like London it’s a real problem let alone in developing nations. The gold sub I’m moving on I never wear now-travelling around with a large chunk of showy gold on your wrist screams ‘mug me’.
We had a case recently in London whereby robbers chased a man and his girlfriend down in Chelsea (really nice part of London) for his Rolex. He refused to give it up and basically they stabbed him to death for it (even when his gf threw the Rolex at them they didn’t stop). Not being a doom monger but showy watches bring both good and unwanted attention. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If he's a race car fan, then the Ceramic Black Daytona would be my choice. I just find black more versatile than white and it's going to be his only Rolex.
Daytonas are insanely hard to get so you must have a great relationship with that AD or you're going to have to go grey and pay a big premium. |

Thanks so far!
Yes he told me that they can get all of them... at one point. The Pepsi is 1.5 years. A Daytona could arrive in 9 month but they cannot finally confirm that as Rolex keeps them dry. Sub, SD43 and Sky D black is available in 6 month and he recommended them as he is confident that he can get them on time (we need the watch in 7 month from now, he said he would try everything for the Daytona). My wife and I bought already several watches there and my AD is a friend, who would do me a favor but even with the great purchasing history and friendship, he mentions that the market is crazy and I can currently pick only ONE hot model as he has to keep other premium customers happy, as well. |

Daytona... Black.
A very professionally sized watch for every occasion. Formal, or casual. All the others are great watches, but all might seem big one way or another. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

All the watches you are thinking about are super nice, and I am certain your cousin would love either one. But they wear very differently so you might want to consider his wrist size. Anyway, my vote would be the Sky Dweller is it will be the one and only. It is sporty, it is classy, it the perfect all around.

I voted Sky Dweller because it will be the most useful timepiece for him since he travels for work frequently.
Of course it can also be argued that picking a timepiece should also represent what you're passionate about (looks like your cousin and I are both motorsports fans and car nuts). If that passion is stronger than the need for utility then a Daytona all the way! Go for which color he would like out of the 2. What a wonderful gesture! Good luck! |

Play it safe and get the man a sub.
SD43 and Sky Dweller are large for my taste. Daytona too special. Sub, although very common, it's kind of the perfect first rolex as well as the perfect one & only. Plus it'll definitely be in well before the date you need it. |

If he has been talking about getting one, he must have mentioned which one he has his eye on?? Why not ask him which one he likes best.

The Submariner wears well under a LS shirt. The SD43 not as well. The Skydweller is a bit more dressy, where I think most would agree a Sub can dress up or down especially if in black.
The Daytona, well, if you can get one then there is no question and he'll love it, or you'll trade it for a Sub and 'keep the change'....

Daytona black is such a solid all-arounder.... Daytona + good size + flash of PCL + classic black. It’s what I would go for.
Pair it later with a 116610LV. ;-) |

I’m 35 as well and I travel a lot for my business.
All of them are great but don’t get the Submariner- it’s very common and believe me as his only watch... he will get bored. Daytona white dial is the way to go otherwise the Sky Dweller but not Submariner, there are of tons of Submariners looking like ... |

Sub or SD is always a good choice. Great all around watches for any activity. Wrist size may help with this decision.
