Should I Make The Trade?

I have a BNIB complete set, stickers all intact Rolex Blue Sky Dweller. My friend wanted to trade me for a Black Dial Ceramic Daytona that he worn once. Do you guys think it is a fair trade? All comments are greatly appreciated.

I currently wear a White Dial Ceramic Daytona. It would be nice to leave my 9 months old son a pair of Daytona. I think the Blue Sky Dweller will loose it value before the Daytona do. Than again that is just my opinion.

Considering you have a daytona I would def not make that trade. But is there a reason you’re not wearing the SkyD? I’m all about leaving my kids my watches. But they surely won’t have stickers on them. In fact they will have been worn and enjoyed immensely and I hope that’s why they will cherish them.

"Here's the three hottest Rolexes in the world. Choose two!"

Obviously, the Daytona/Sky-D is more diverse than the white/black Daytona combo. Seems like the aftermarket values of the black Day-C and blue Sky-D are both in the high teens, so from that perspective it's a fair trade.

I'd say if you are trying to amass two identical Daytonas (except for the dial) for your son, it's a real long shot that he will grow to appreciate TWO of them. So keep whichever two you like more.

I would do that trade but it’s all personal preference. You already have a white dial so you obviously like the fit and comfort of Daytona as you’re wearing that over the sky. I agree with your thoughts in the holding value as well.

Seeing as you have the white dial Daytona I wouldn't do it. Though I do prefer the black dial Daytona over the white dial.

I think its a fair trade, Sky is £1K more at retail but less on the grey market. I'd only do the swap if you really want the watch, don't think about futures prices.

Nope. I keep the Sky Dweller if I'm you. It's a great combo with the white Daytona. And it's BNIB, single owner.

Wow.

Thanks for the comments from all different perspectives. The reason I didn't wear my Blue Sky Dweller because it is too big for my wrist and I just left it in the safe deposit for my son. My 2018 Basel released Pepsi and the new Deep Sea JC also arrived a few days ago. I plan to keep them for my son as well.

I would not do this.

I would not want duplicate watches as future items. I buy watches to wear now.

I think trade value wise its close enough... I also have a white 116500 and would prefer to add the blue skyD over a black daytona personally

Why do you think your 9 month old son is going to want four Rolex watches in twenty years?

You won’t wear it since it’s too big, so definitely make the trade as you likely WILL wear the Daytona. The watches you hand down to your children will be more meaningful if you’ve worn them.

It’s a fair trade. Just comes down to which one you prefer to own.

If you do the trade, you need to have some cash coming your way, looking at pricing on the secondary market.

Here is the question...

Would you buy a black Daytona when you already have a white one above msrp?

If you aren’t feeling the SkyD I would either (1) sell to me for msrp or (2) sell on the forums here and make your money!

It’s probably a fair trade, but I wouldn’t do it. In my opinion, you’ve already got the more desirable of the two colored SS Daytona’s...plus I think the blue SD is stunning.

It sounds like a fair trade, although I’d probably keep the Sky Dweller if I was in your position.

He might want 4 Apple watches v 29

I ask my son if he wanted a Rolex and he said no, just Apple v3 so we can do more things with it.

Just buy the watches you want and wear them. I wouldn't keep making purchases or trades for the sake of your son.
He might not be into watches, or if he is half the fun of it is building up your own collection which he will probably want to do. 1 or 2 of your cherished pieces will be great but watches sitting in the safe which had no attachment to you, not so much.

That said I wouldn't make the trade, I would rather the diversity of the 2 different watches.

I used my kids excuse to buy watches then realized my kids will only probably want the watch I wore the most for sentimental reasons. There is a good bet they will want the money I could have made by investing $15k for 25 years. A modern watch is horrible investment.

Your heart is in the right right place but, he's only nine months old? Unless your doctor just gave you six months to live (he didn't did he?!!) what's the hurry? I mean the little guy is only 9 months old, who knows what might happen in the future. Economics, health, personal likes / dislikes - way too early to predict
what might affect your generous and touching gift idea. Plus, does he need two? As pointed out, he might not even want one.

Invest in a mutual fund, or investment acct. 401K whatever. (I'm not sure what options US citizens have, I'm in Toronto)

Watches, even as gifts can be a trifle risky and they're Not investments. Sorry to be a downer, but not
Everyone is a WIS.

sincerely,
Mark

Wear your watches. If the SkyD is too big for you then dump it. It will prob be too big for your son in 20 years. If you love the DaytonaC and see yourself wearing both colors, then do the trade and don’t look back.

You are going to leave your kid a whole collection of unused watches? Is it because you think they will increase in value? I say you just invest that money instead and give that to him. I think a lot of why people love to inherit their dad's watch is because they grew up seeing him wear it. They associate their dad to the watch and it makes them feel warm and fuzzy when they see it. I doubt he will have those kinds of feelings if he sees a bunch of stickered watches that you never wore.
