Beginners Luck

Thought I’d share my experience of getting a Sky Dweller SS Black here.

Held out on getting a nice watch over the years due to various reasons (having to pay off MBA loans, lack of time to research or running after one). Earlier this year I started looking and wanted a Rolex, but something more differentiated and was looking mostly for a Daytona or Sky Dweller.

Unlike people here, didn’t know of the SS shortage. Thought about getting it in Europe (gf’s preferred destination for luxury goods with the VAT refund)when I was there couple of months ago - only to be told no chance.

Being from NYC, I didnt really consider walking into any of the NYC stores with no track record. Recently I was switching jobs and was visiting family and friends in the South during my time off. Hometown didn’t have any AD so I went to the nearest small town and big town ADs. Both mentioned difficulty getting anything, could do sub mariner waitlist, but no Sky Dweller, etc. Figured if I’ve waited this long, I can spend little more time looking.

One of the nights, guess out of boredom I emailed all ADs within ~200 miles of my hometown (~7ish). Heard back from one saying they’ll do waitlist only for locals and it’ll take a while. After some back and forth they added me to the waitlist for Sky Dweller given my hometown in theory didn’t have a local AD.

What was shocking was that I got call same afternoon saying they did get a Black Sky Dweller same day and the person on the waitlist turned it down (turns out demand is actually higher for white vs black for some of the ADs I talked with). I was traveling out of state for almost a week, but they agreed to hold and won’t let me pay over the phone.

After over a week, stopped by and paid in person. Got it shipped out of state (and didn’t lose it) for tax savings. They took out most stickers saying it’ll be annoying to do it myself and I didn’t mind anyway. Also threw in first service for free. Got the warranty card same day.

Overall, turned out to be a great experience compared to many of the stories here. Don’t plan to go wild with different ones (not a gold or color guy like for Pepsi, etc.) - maybe a white Daytona whenever my name comes up. Wanted to share with broader audience, especially to give hope about ADs who’ll still try to help when they can.

Congrats on that one. I think the Sky dweller looks best in black.

Didn’t think about asking this. Figured packages are generally safe in transit and I have a doorman so won’t get picked up randomly. Probably would have different view after seeing some recent posts.

Make sure you get in writing that the first service is free. Even with the best intentions 5 years down the road it’s easy to make mistakes. I had an issue with an Omega free service and got lucky after being told multiple times i wasn’t due one.

Man, that’s so lucky.
Sans tax and free service, equals mahooosive relative discount. No to mention lack of waiting.
Get yourself down the casino!

Pretty cool, next is the BLRO, lols. The recent shipping horror stories have given me huge butterflies about mailing watches.
Congratulations. Pictures never get old so lets see 'em.
