Should I sell my current collection for a AP RO?

Hi guys,

I know this is a weird question but I was wondering if i should my current collection consisting of : Rolex gmt master 16750 1981, Rolex datejust two tone 126231 and a Cartier Santos blue dial WSSA0030. I surely most add the difference because I don't think these watches can get me the RO.

I'm currently 24 and still in university and was extremely lucky that my parents gifted me this watches during the last few years. The santos was a gift when I got my first major and the gmt was a present for my 18th birthday. Moreover I bought the datejust myself after saving for a while.

Yes I know there are more important things I need to worry right about but the AP royal oak is my grail. My parents don't mind me selling the watches as long as I'm happy. BTW yeah this is a weird thing to ask you guys but I appreciate the input.

This was just a random idea I had. Still I'm already very happy with what I have. But it doesn't hurt to hear your guys opinions ;)

Cheers.

Never sell gifts from parents — long term likelihood to regret.

Save up and add, or give strong hints that you want RO upon graduation!

The thing with AP is they will probably release a new version in future that will become your new grail, so no such thing as a single grail if AP is in the mix.

Congrats on a nice start to the collection!

Thanks for the response!

Maybe selling gifts isn't the best idea yeah. But my grail is the classic 37mm 15450ST. I don't think that the new line could match that piece. Just my two cents.

You don’t have to have it now, do you? You have three beautiful watches that you wear basically in any events of your life. You are extremely lucky like you said to have these watches. Enjoy wearing them, save money to buy “grail” watch that you want. I had to sell a watch my mom gifted to me to get my business going. I’d never sell it just to get another watch.

I would say keep the gifts, at least until you reach the age of 40. Only then will you have a real feel for their sentimental value. You have three beautiful watches there - live with them until you can afford the RO.

You are chasing a watch that isn't rare. Also, I can promise once you have it you will have a new grail. Patience is the lesson here. I also think you will regret this decision if you go through with it.

Agreed, definitely keep that GMT. Always worth more to keep a gift from loved ones, you have plenty of time to save and chase the Royal Oak!

No....Don't. Those things with the hex bezel and screws look hideous like some $70 junk watch from the gas station.

What RO? The ones made today are not good; they aren’t monobloc like they were initially made.

The RO 15450ST 37mm white dial, I know that in the watch community it isn't regarded as a special piece I guess. But for me it is an absolutely perfect piece and the 36mm day date close behind it.

Keep the gifts they will become more sentimental and meaningful with time. Your grail RO may change with time also. So many people have traded watches, cars, jewelry...etc. when they are young and need cash for something else to then later in life spend years trying to chase down what they once let go. Can always get a RO down the road but likely would never get the gifts parents gave back again.

i would never sell watches any watches my parents gifted me. as you get older, youll realize how special they actually are and that they are priceless. i am positive you will regret it as time goes on and you start a family of your own.

ultimately, its your decision. my father gifted me his rolex years ago and its a watch i would not sell for any price or any watch. i will pass it down to my son when the time is right and i hope he will do the same with his children.

also, at the age of 24 you have quite the collection. appreciate it and add the RO when the time is right. you have many, many, many years ahead of you to buy watches.

You're absolutely right, I was just entertaining the idea. The GMT is most special piece in my collection and I should appreciate the watches that I already have. Thank you so much for that response, it put things in a clearer perspective.

Aside from the sentimental factor: I tried the 15202 back in 2010 and thought it was a flimsy overpriced datejust. The jeweler offered me a good discount but I still went with the GO Panoreserve. What I’m saying (aside from that I’m not a very smart investor): take a deep breath, sell the DJ and put the money in beers with buddies.

Keep what you have. All are great watches, including the Santos. You can always get a RO later.

Have to agree with the above, I would ALWAYS keep a gift from my parents. Once they are gone the sentimental value will exceed everything else. Its your life though so these are decisions you need to make...
