Effective Altruism, Charity, Giving...

This is a long sometimes rambling essay on Sam Bankman-Fried, effective altruism, and charities in general and the positive and negative affects it has on people.

It's also about the billionaire class.

A "cult" imo comprised of wealthy folks who try to force their often idiotic and malignant ideological ideas upon others, all under the guise of "charity". Look no further than the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation...

1000%. I’ve read that Bill Gates is the largest private holder of farm land in the US now and is pushing the idea “He knows best” as it relates to lab grown meat. Hard pass. The word that comes to mind with some, certainly not all, is hubris.

I say this without malice, but did you know that these Wired magazine articles are behind a paywall that sells subscriptions?

Effective Altruism, Charity, Giving...

The dark side of altruism is when rich, unelected CEOs try to impose their unwanted politics onto the masses via their businesses. I can give plenty of examples, but let’s not go there…

In SBF’s case, he just used altruism as a marketing ploy. He wasn’t really an altruist in the purest sense. He just told everyone he was to help market himself and FTX. Ultimate sleaze bag.

The positive side of altruism is that many companies and billionaires legitimately give back to the community in a positive way.

Too bad there isn't some altruistic billionaire giving away WIRED subscriptions.

Wasn't paywalled for me. Didn't bother reading it, but could have.

Mike Lazaridis of Blackberry is an excellent example of this in our local community in Waterloo.

Not sure why some people hit a paywall with this.

Mine doesn't. Sorry if you get blocked with it. With most sites now, you get a few free articles before you get the "sales pitch".

I get a variety of feeds off of POCKET. Some of the feeds are nothing much and some contain some interesting stuff. And most are able to be forwarded. NYT articles work this way usually. If you try to take it right from the Times you get the paywall. The only sites I have a subscription to are NYTimes and LA Times.

This particular article was interesting not necessarily due to the Bankman-Fried connection, but more to the concept of charity and how it can have positive and negative affects.....the law of unintended consequences....type of thing. And also the billionaires that are a part of this "philosophy" of Effective Altruism.

I found it interesting he talks about charity and the fact that the recipients will often soon grow to dislike the donor/donations. Sort of human nature, I guess. And how often the donor has a hidden agenda.

No worries
I did find a workaround.

I think Marshall McLuhan is spinning at what's become of his beautiful ideas of the '60's.

The affluent thrive on Oxytocin while giving.

And their recipients are soon alienated

You can't talk about SBF without mentioning his massive influence and political contributions to the left party. He was the 2nd largets donor to the Biden 2020 campaign (Soros being #1).

I'm old enough to remember when we called for reduced money and influence in political campaigns. I guess that's fallen through when "your guy" is doing it.

He was his mothers boy and she probably introduced the effective altruism to him and he went with it even though he probably didn't much care about it.

He was also giving massive donations to the other side through proxies.

But your post helps to get topics shut down.

This is a common talking point. Wake me when he's the 2nd largest donor to the DJT campaign 😴
