Nicolas Foulkes' Golden Ellipse prediction

I am not sure if anyone has read the most recent QP magazine, in which Foulkes speculates that the next Patek series to benefit from a massive increase in demand - as the Nautilus series did a few years ago - may be the Golden Ellipse.

I have to say, I would not have seen that coming! Thoughts?!

(That said, I would certainly love to own a 5738P).

Off hand, I cannot think of any Patek that is less likely to increase in demand in the Patek line.

It doesn't come in steel.
Does not have a complication.
It is smaller in size.
Oval is not a popular shape in men's watches. (Just look at the resale prices of the AP Millenary. From comments I here from other people they feel the shape is feminine. I don't necessarily agree.)

The Millenary is larger, looks more like a sport watch, comes in steel and with complications and still sells at incredible discounts.

I think there is no hope for the Patek Ellipse.

Just to confirm it's a no from you then?

I agree but I did try a blue ellipse the other week, is lovely but didn't give me an erection so to speak

In psychology, there is a term called "power of suggestion". It is used effectively in marketing to influence people's purchasing behavior and it is frequently using in luxury product markets. Many bloggers use it as well as instagrammers and YouTubers.

Foulkes is certainly very knowledgeable about Patek Phillipe as you can tell from his recent book. Many people respect his opinions and it will carry some weight. How powerful his words and opinions are - we will have to wait and see.

I agree that is was a surprising prediction! Maybe he or his friends have a stash of Golden Ellipses. I would predict the rise of Gondolo’s before the GE’s. But overall, very sadly, I don’t see much demand for any no complication dress watch any time soon.

See #8 on Christie's list below, maybe Mr. Foulkes has that one in mind:

Naw that fellow is silly - I own a golden ellipse and so does my sweet wife. Much as I wish it were true I don’t envision either of them increasing much in value :-(. That said though, they do indeed offer some of best value for money deals in all the PP line. Just MO :-)

They are beautiful pieces but I see a revival in interest happening around the same time as say GP Laureato becomes popular...

I had one years ago, it was ok and that was it. If it has another brands name on it would anyone be discussing it? I’d have one if I could get it cheap enough but only because I’d struggle to wear it

Indeed. Maybe 5738 size or slightly bigger, in steel, and with a salmon dial and dauphine hands too?!
