I'm really not a huge fan of the big arabic numbers on the explorer, plus if you're concerned with a good 'fit,' you do already have a black dial rolex (sub). From the two options I definitely vote the OP, but while I do think its not a bad piece I feel like there are other models that you should consider or try on, such as an explorer II or gmt or even a steel and platinum YM. All of those can work as a nice 'in between' piece because they aren't quite as rugged as the sub but can't be worn as well with a suit as a DJ.

I also feel like with the OP or Explorer you might find that in a few years you're just not wearing it as much because you have two nicer watches. At least go to your local AD and try them on, wearing some clothing you might wear when you would wear the OP.

I would go explorer. As you are not necessarily looking for diversity in your collection but an in between piece. Just got out of a meeting where an individual was wearing a 36mm explorer. Under the radar, unless you are afflicted with the WIS disease! Great looking watch.

Tough call and I had the same dilema last year, but went with the Explorer I. Both watches are nicely understated and could.go casual or formal with ease. Try them on and see if one speaks to you more. The heritage, blue lume, easy-link extension and clasp safety lock on the Explorer I tipped the scales for me, but both are beauties. Good luck!

So, I keep seeing people mention the history of the Explorer being a big draw...but am I wrong in that the actual "history" of the Explorer is actually the Oyster Perpetual's history? Wasn't the Explorer just created as a homage to the OP worn to the top of Everest? I could certainly be wrong, just curious....

Yes I thought the same. Also wasn't the OP the first automatic, water resistant watch?

Cosmetically I prefer the OP - as someone earlier said I also don't like the large numerals on the Explorer's dial.

There is also a significant price difference between the two, and I am not sure what the Explorer premium is actually giving you.

Great pictures and great to hear how it's worked for you. I also agree with others about the Arabic numerals on the exp.

I far prefer the angled bezel on the Explorer over the domed of the OP.
Does your DJ have the smooth bezel or the fluted bezel?

In a vacuum I would prefer the Explorer, and I do feel like I can't really think of a situation I would want to wear an OP over a DJ. I think if you're looking for a more casual look than the DJ, and something you can wear everyday, the Explorer is better suited for your need.

If you just want to add a different dial color, and get right inbetween the Sub and DJ with the Rhodium dial OP or add some blue to the collection, I could understand going that route as well, but to me the only thing it offers is some color variation.

Yep.....well kinda. Someone else invented the very first automatic watch (dont recall the name right now) but it used a bumper movement. When that company went under, Hans Wilsdorf refined the design to use a full 360 rotor design and put it in his Oyster case.....creating the Oyster Perpetual.

But, the Ian Fleming James Bond references. That's part of the Explorer history as well.

I picked up the rhodium 114300. I also had the center links polished. Yes, I'm a big fan of PCLs and I know they're not for everyone but I like what it adds to the watch. Only downside for me is the legibility. The non lume hour markers don't stand out as much at a quick glance.

I had the polishing work done at ABC Watchwerks for my Submariner. I shipped only the bracelet there and they had it overnighted back in 2 days.

For my OP, I had DavidSW complete the work before he shipped it to me.

I would definitely recommend you go through ABC Watchwerks.

All of this is in the US though.
