is the gmt ll actually waterproof?

Can a GMT ll be worn while swimming or showering? I am figuring on a depth of no more than 10 feet or so while swimming. I realize that Rolex publishes a waterproof depth figure, but I am interested in peoples' actual experiences.

I had a brand new GMT ll in 05-06 (it was stolen), but never mustered the courage to wear it while getting wet.

Have a GMT II. Shower, pool, beach. Don't worry, it's a Rolex.

Thanks for the responses. One can say "It's a Rolex", but first hand accounts such as these are what I find most valuable, and certainly appreciated.

The twinlock/triplock threaded crown, sapphire crystal and screw-in case back make for on really solidly waterproof case, a true "Oyster". Rolex usually understates there waterproofness as well, most of their watches could easily rate for double of whats printed out on the dial.

The GMT should be waterproof to about 100 meters or 330ft. I would suggest that you get it pressure tested by a watchmaker every year to ensure everything is sealing properly.

Only if it's a genuine one. The fakes start to "leak" beyond a depth of 10 feet!!

I usually wear a watch whenever i swim... Use to do it with my old Tag F1 and also doing it with my Submariner as well. Its usually one way you test your watches.

Yes it is..

My GMT or EXP II have become my travel watches to the Caribbean and Hawaii since I gave up diving. Both have been snorkeling and swimming in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans (Caribbean Sea)..

Wear the dang thing. It's good to 100M. I had a Timex rated to 50M that I wore as summer camp staff- didn't take it off for a month and change. DEET, lake water, chlorinated water, Kool-Aid, whatever, it shrugged it right off. I'd still be wearing it if it hadn't started to pit.

Chill. It is a Rolex. You will not hurt it. I give my Sub major use, in the pool, the ocean, backpacking, mountain biking. It takes a lickin' and keeps on ticken'. Wait I think that's a Timex!

It doesn't say swimproof on the green hang tag for nothing. The whole point of any Rolex in the Oyster range is to be waterproof - the only time you have to panic about it leaking water is if you're diving well below 100m - and if you were doing that, you'd be wearing a specialised diving watch anyway.

Wow! I am overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of responses, and thank you for taking the time. I haven't yet purchased a replacement for the purloined piece. I wanted to investigate the qualities a little more in depth prior to belying up to the bar.

Excellent- I'm getting that as long as the watch is maintained, its waterproof characteristics are above what is advertised.

GMT scuba diving

Was in Cambodia a few weeks ago and went diving with my 60's GMT. Albeit only ~20 meters... Must say, the view of a Rolex is enhanced (if that's possible) underwater! Makes the experience that much more special.

Also had a great conversation with Rudy - the owner of Dive Shop Cambodia about Rolex Submariners. Business is good and time for him to get one. If you're in Sihanoukville (Kampong Som) check them out.

For more than 25 years my Oyster Quartz never left my wrist every time i went swimming in the pool or at sea and i never had any problem.
Professional models are more tough.
Enjoy it in any situation.
No worries.

Truth be told I would doubt if 90% of all divers type watches ever see any water other than a dip in the pool or perhaps the odd shower .

Good to know my question is laughable among the cognoscenti. Hey, somebody has to ask the newbish questions! I'm glad to hear that the Rolex rep has been earned through the quality of the production models, rather than through the smoke and mirrors of ad copy.

Took the plunge, as it were

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=86830

Well, I couldn't resist. I had the black bezel ss GMT, but this red and black bezel beauty looks like candy-coated irresistible-ness to moir. This unit should be darkening my door in a day or so.. Let's see if I can keep this one a little longer than my first GMT (must not fall asleep intoxicated in the company of someone I don't know very well...).

Love the pics- diving in Cambodia (!), drinking Red Stripe in some tropical port... active bunch 'round here.
