Finding the perfect travel companion... Incoming 5164A

I got bitten by the Patek bug just a little over 4 months ago and started off with a 5167. I was quite amazed with how well put together it was with its very sleek profile, stunning anthracite dial and supreme comfortness, dare I say one of the most comfortable watches that I have ever owned. I thought I would live forever in happiness with it, and could wait patiently for a 5712.

Well that is, until the 5164 caught my eye. When I think Patek, I think complications, and they've done an amazing job of integrating a very practical complication, and somehow made the piece cleaner and more balanced. I've always loved the idea of having a dual time, and bought a BLNR for that purpose, but found the function not so practical to use with having to unscrew the crown and adjust the local time.

So then my search began for one. One thing that I simply could not ignore was the huge price tag on the 5164 - it looked like it was going to be a pretty significant cash top-up from the 5167. After much enabling, and hassling another fellow collector, my lucky stars aligned and I found a mint example that was only a few months old at a steal of a price (pricing was like early 2017!) I ended up doing very well on this consolidation, as I had first estimated that I would need to add a few thousand in cash on top of the proceeds of my 5167 and BLNR to upgrade, but I ended up only shelling out a few hundred extra.

Today, my wait came to an end:

My hands were shaking in anticipation of opening up the box. I felt like a 5 year old kid again, waiting to open presents on Christmas morning. And there she was inside:

That feeling when seeing the 5164 was indescribable - I've had a huge wave of incomings this year and many in the past, but I've never felt such a rush of excitement when this one arrived.

Even though I recently floated the idea of keeping both the 5164 and 5167, I knew immediately that the 5167 was toast when I got to put on the 5164.

Although the 5167 is still an amazing piece, the 5164 really takes it to another level for me. It fixes the very minor things I didn't like about the 5167, and elevates the watch to near perfection for me. The 5164 case size and proportions are impeccable with the right amount of presence and weight, whereas the 5167 actually felt too thin at times for its case size and sportiness. The 5164 case also looks more balanced with the pushers on the side. And the globe within globe on the 5164 without a white datewheel to detract is also stunning.

Yes, the rotary date dial is a downfall for some, but for now, my eyesight can still read it perfectly fine.

And now, finally sized down to my 6.5" wrist:

Hoping for many great memories and journeys with this one:

Next stop will be Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangkok with this beauty - I can't wait to see what other places this one will follow me along to!

So for any of you on the fence about the 5164 - just do it!

Many congrats, my friend, on the hottest Patek at the moment, I love this watch as you know and I laughed knowingly when you said the 5167 was toast when side by side, best use the funds for another beauty on your great journey.

Big congrats to you. I did the opposite way whereby I sold my 5164 and get the 5167 instead few tears back. I am happy with the simple dial of 5167 and I find the window date type work for me. I have hard time to read the date on 5164 as it is pointer date type.

Enjoy your 5164.

Congrats on the purchase. Love the 5164 and have been thinking about picking one up for sometime. Although I’m trying to be disciplined and only select a specific brand / genre from a specific manufacturer. The price tag difference is relatively big (at points) but tell me why Aquanaught versus Nautilus?

Excellent post for those of us trying to decide between the two.

Would love to see more wrist shots! (I have a similar wrist size)
